Department Summary

The Disability Early Intervention Secondary Transition & Youth (DESTNY) grant management unit houses five established preexisting research and outreach entities within the University of Oregon College of Education: The Secondary Special Education & Transition (SSET) research unit the Center for Human Development (CHD) which houses the University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD) research and outreach in Early Intervention (EI) Oregon Career Information System (ORCIS) and Oregon Research Schools Network (ORSN). Each of these units has tremendous capacity and impact through cutting edge scholarship leading personnel preparation programs stateoftheart technical assistance and outreach the demonstrated capacity to engage in and disseminate effective tools and technologies and the necessary supports for managing the fiscal and reporting requirements of federally funded projects. DESTNY is devoted to generating new knowledge assessment prevention and intervention. The combined expertise access to a wealth of human technological and material resources and our unyielding commitment to addressing the most challenging social problems provide us with a unique opportunity to improve the lives and outcomes of children and youth with disabilities and their families. Currently there are 24 research and training grants and over 50 staff in the DESTNY Programs.

Position Summary

The DESTNY Grant Management Unit at the University of Oregon is seeking qualified applicants for its open career research assistant and research associate positions.

DESTNYs research assistants work as members of a research team under the direct supervision of other faculty researchers. Research Assistants contribute in many ways to the research project by conducting research outreach and/or external engagement proposal development and supervision and/or mentoring.

Research associates assist in carrying out a particular research agenda. Research associates contribute in many ways to the research project including conducting research and managing grants. The research associate leads and/or collaborates in research demonstration outreach and technical assistance projects within DESTNY. Research associates perform independent roles in research activities requiring an advanced level of knowledge in disability and special education. The work performed in these positions will be predominantly intellectual and require consistent use of discretion and judgment.

Possible research areas encompass program development statistical analyses covering all aspects of preparation of scientific papers presentation and grant application preparation professional development of project staff offsite research activities involving a variety of populations like individuals with developmental disabilities or nonEnglish speaking groups and the establishment of population databases essential for research and evaluation projects.

Some positions may require bilingual written and oral fluency.

Some positions may include overnight travel and/or extensive previous experience in a similar job role.

Minimum Requirements

Research Assistant Rank:
Bachelors or masters degree in Education or a related area.
Evidence of expertise in areas required for program grant or contract (e.g. writing reports for funders assisting in writing grant applications)


Research Associate Rank:
Doctoral degree in Education Special Education Educational Psychology Educational Administration or related area.
Evidence of expertise in areas required for program grant or contract (e.g. supervision of staff grant writing and management)
Experience in research activities required for the position (e.g. data collection research design)

Preferred Qualifications

Experience providing training and technical assistance
Experience with initiating and completing tasks independently according to timelines.
Experience communicating effectively and problemsolving with research and project staff and participants of diverse racial cultural linguistic religious and ethnic backgrounds.
Experience in data collection observations and management.
Experience coordinating managing timelines and scheduling across multiple tasks projects and individuals.
Experience in developing and writing professional materials (e.g. training and resource guides reports to funders fact sheets).
Experience providing professional presentations at local state and national conferences.
Strong training presence and experience in delivering training in a variety of contexts
Experience with computer programs including project management tools (e.g. software databases and email).
