Job Description

Description

The Deckhand is a parttime position that is part of a ships crew. The duties include maintenance mooring boat preparation and breakdown and supervision of passengers on the vessel. Hours will vary according to need and will be determined on a weekly basis. This position typically maintains a 5 to 25hour work schedule and reports to the Director Marine Science and Technology.

Examples of Duties

  1. Clean the vessel after use or as part of routine maintenance as assigned by the supervisor.
  2. Maintains strict inventory and control of all equipment on thevessel.
  3. Provides a briefing topassengers.
  4. Prepares the vessel foruse.
  5. Assists with refueling thevessel.
  6. Issues collects and stows equipment on the vessel asnecessary.
  7. Practices risk management in order to prevent injury (moves weights to the floor secures cylinders and equipment assists with passengers entering and exiting the wateretc..
  8. Checks emergency equipment (O2 First Aid Kit etc. daily.
  9. Assists theCaptainInstructorandLabTechnical Advisorinensuringthatthatalldivers are following safe diving practices according to PADI and MUSstandards.
  10. Sets up appropriate safety equipment including line systems and redundant air supplies according to the dive plan orexcursion.
  11. Works cooperatively with the Captain to decide if the weather is reasonable for the planned dives orexcursion.
  12. Is familiar with risk management and can implement emergency action plans.
  13. Logs incident/accident reports asnecessary.
  14. Serves as a positive rolemodel and mentor to Divemaster candidates and students.
  15. Identifies and responds to passenger behaviorissues.
  16. Works cooperatively with Captains Faculty Lab Technical Advisors other Deckhands and College Staff.
  17. Work in a supervisory capacity on a CFK vessel that conducts dive training.
  18. Other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Knowledge Abilities and Skills:

  • Knowledge of local diving environment including the underwater training area reef and wrecks.
  • Knowledge and experience in monitoring the weather for approaching storms.
  • Ability to fill scuba cylinders according to PSI standards.
  • Ability to carry out clerical duties (e.g. collect check and maintain required paperwork).
  • Ability to carry out job duties with minimal or no direct supervision.
  • Ability to communicate on a regular basis with the Director Marine Science and Technology Faculty Captains Deckhands and the Dive Facilities Manager.
  • Knowledge of College mission policies procedures and services.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Possess strong critical thinking decisionmaking and strong communication skills.
  • Possess interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with a diverse Faculty Staff and student body.

Education and Qualifications:

  • High school degree or equivalent.
  • Experience supporting activities related to CFK.
  • Minimum one year of professional experience as a deckhand is preferred.
  • Must be a part of the Maritime Consortium and able to pass random drug testing or ability to pass a drug test at the time of employment.
(A comparable amount of training education or experience can be substituted for the minimum qualifications.

Licenses Certifications or Registrations:
  • Divemaster certification (PADI NAUI SDI SSDI etc. required Open Water Scuba Instructor preferred.
  • Current (within 24 months) CPR/First Aid/AED certification required.
  • Current (within 24 months) Emergency Oxygen Provider certification preferred.
Physical Skills:
  • Ability to lift objects weighing up to 70lbs.
  • Works in an underwater environment.
  • Works on a vessel.
  • Works outside in various climate conditions.
