Job Description

Job Overview

The English Learner Immigrant Youth (IY) Instructor is responsible for supporting the educational process of identified Immigrant Youth (IY) and Refugee students and their families by providing support and being a link between school district staff community agencies and families in the delivery of support services to students.

Roles and Responsibilities

The following information is intended to describe the overall nature and scope of the work being performed. This is not a comprehensive listing of all responsibilities or tasks; work may differ and other work may be assigned when deemed appropriate.

  • Researches and serves as a thought leader on the unique federal and state policies legislation regional/local resources and general information that relates to the success of Immigrant Youth (IY) and Refugee students in order to advocate for their needs within the Division of English Learners and throughout the LCPS community
  • Provides consultation and collaborates with schoolbased staff (such as but not limited to Family Liaisons Counselors Social Workers EL Teacher/s United Mental Health Team (UMHTs) etc. to provide an extra layer of support to identified Immigrant Youth (IY)and Refugee students
  • Develops and facilitates Professional Development opportunities related to the needs of Immigrant Youth Refugee students and the unique cultural characteristics of their families to LCPS staff
  • Develops coordinates and implements multilingual family workshops to the families of English Learner Immigrant Youth (IY) and Refugee students on resources and services available (ex. Alternative pathways to college/career) aimed to academically accelerate students
  • Conducts oneonone and small group supports with LCPS students and families who meet the VDOEs Immigrant Youth (IY) definition and LIEP eligibility criteria
  • Creates and maintains active partnerships with both internal and external community service agencies and stakeholders to support the needs of Immigrant Youth (IY) and Refugee students
  • Maintains and monitors data records on Immigrant Youth (IY) populations and provides Division of English Learner staff and leadership with quarterly data reports and serves as an advocate for Immigrant Youth (IY) and families within LCPS as well as with individual LCPS schools.

Qualifications

Below are the minimum qualifications for this job. Equivalent combinations of education and experience are also acceptable.

Education

  • Minimum of a bachelors degree from an accredited college or university in Education Social Work Family Studies Communications or another related field required

Experience

Licenses and Certifications

  • Virginia Social Work/Counseling license preferred

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Bilingual skills recommended Spanish preferred
  • Knowledge of the LCPS community and experience working with diverse communities
  • Strong skills with MS Office tools including PowerPoint Excel and Word
  • Excellent organizational human relations and communication skills
  • Able to work flexible hours outside of the traditional 8 am 5 pm window
  • Other duties as assigned

While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly talking expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. The employee must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately loudly or quickly. The employee must possess normal cognitive abilities including the ability to learn recall and apply certain practices and policies. Frequently sitting and/or remaining in a stationary position for long periods of time. Exerting up to 40 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift carry push pull or otherwise move objects.
