Description

Under the direction and supervision of the District Transportation Manager or designee the Routing Specialist will assist to coordinate the transportation of students to and from school and related school district sponsored activities. This position helps ensure the proper functioning of district transportation operations by organizing and maintaining logistical needs including using computerized routing software working with district transportation providers and establishing scheduling and routing costeffective safe and efficient routes while effectively communicating and assisting in resolving issues or other department concerns. This position works collaboratively and is assisted by the Transportation Specialist Leads.

  • Daily Start/End times: 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M.
  • Anticipated Start Date: 5/12/2025

SALARY: Level 2 on the Professional/Technical Salary Schedule. Salary depends on experience in the same or similar position. Promotion or transfer placements will be determined by percentage of increase and consideration of appropriate experience credit. DOWNLOAD SALARY SCHEDULE

Responsibilities

  1. Utilizing a computerized routing program design and maintain assigned routes and shuttles within prescribed time and efficiency requirements while equalizing loads and ensuring safe transportation of students.
  2. Interact professionally and cooperatively with staff administrators students parents/guardians and patrons within designated boundaries of authority and confidentiality including answering telephones taking messages greeting and directing visitors resolving conflicts and disseminating information.
  3. Able to read and interpret maps for route creation analysis and troubleshooting issues.
  4. Work with transportation vendors and multiple software systems to ensure timely integration of student and route information.
  5. Communicate orally and in writing with transportation staff and drivers with route information changes required special equipment and other relevant information as required.
  6. Monitor compliance with state pupil transportation guidelines and other applicable rules and regulations as assigned. Maintains and assists in providing information for state reports.
  7. Provide backup routing support for other area(s) not primarily assigned.
  8. Coordinate with staff and outside agencies/vendors to ensure district and/or student needs are met including advising stakeholders of route changes bus changes time adjustments etc.
  9. Prepare compose and process various district documents including standard letters memoranda reports etc. independently with little or no instruction in an accurate manner as requested.
  10. Create and maintain a variety of files (computer and hard copy including confidential files) to ensure accurate and uptodate information is available.
  11. Work flexible hours including weekends and holidays as department/job duties require. Assist with planning and scheduling and attend department meetings and training as required.
  12. Assist in special projects/additional duties assigned by department Manager or designee.
  13. Maintain and update knowledge and skills required for success in the position by participating in professional development as needed or as assigned.
  14. Comply with all District policies and all applicable laws.
  15. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  1. Demonstrated ability and aptitude to perform the responsibilities listed.
  2. Bachelors degree in Business or related field. A combination of Associate degree and at least five years of related work experience can be substituted for a bachelors degree.
  3. Two years of dispatch/routing or transportation administrative experience preferred; bus driving experience preferred.
  4. Demonstrated knowledge of the geographical region of Spokane and outlying areas.
  5. Ability to concentrate on detail and be precise and accurate.
  6. Demonstrates personal characteristics including dependability highstress tolerance reliability flexibility punctuality professionalism and an ability to maintain confidentiality.
  7. Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as the ability to learn new ideas and skills for solving problems within a dynamic team environment.
  8. Proficiency in computer applications including Microsoft & Google products. Experience with transportation schedule and routing software preferred. Ability to learn and be proficient in existing or new technology platforms to perform the responsibilities listed.
  9. Ability to organize and prioritize under pressure.
  10. Demonstrated ability to relate and work positively and effectively with a diverse group of students staff and community in a confidential manner.
  11. Demonstrated ability to work independently.
  12. Required use of personal vehicle.
  13. Relates positively to youth and adults of varying socioeconomic cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

  2. Stipends Leave Accruals and Holidays Stipends leaves and paid holidays are in accordance with the applicable collective bargaining agreement Collective Bargaining Agreementsas negotiated.
