Founded in 1961 Highline College was the first community college to be established in King County and is one of 34 community and technical colleges. Professional Responsibilities
Please address the following responsibilities in your cover letter. If you dont have experience in an academic setting please address them within the context of your professional experience:
Teaching:Teach courses in Adult Basic Education and GED. Teaching assignments may include evening/weekend online hybrid and offcampus sections. Create a welcoming and supportive learning environment and use evidencebased practices to improve the success of diverse students; in collaboration with colleagues identify and implement strategies designed to close equity gaps experienced by students from historically minoritized groups. Engage in selfreflective practice. Fulltime faculty typically teach the equivalent of 15 credits per quarter.
Advising/ Coaching/ Mentoring: Work with students outside of class to help them choose courses and get connected with campus and community resources. Participate in professional learning opportunities focused on culturally responsive advising and establishing relationships with students;
Collaborate with colleagues/participate in shared governance:In collaboration with colleagues engage in continuous improvement through collegewide assessment processes. Participate in department division and other College activities including College governance. Establish and maintain respectful ethical and professional relationships with students and colleagues;
Professional development/ ongoing professional learning:Engage in ongoing professional learning. This includes remaining current in your discipline and evidencebased practices for culturally response inclusive and antiracist pedagogies.
Minimum Qualifications:
Masters degree (or higher) in Adult Education Education Spanish Language and/or Literature or a closely related field; AND
Fluency in Spanish and English. This position will perform instruction roles in Spanish and will conduct meetings and campus governance in English; AND
Experience teaching ABE (Adult Basic Education) and GED in a community college communitybased or undergraduate setting.
Pending degrees must be completed by September 2025 and verified by a letter from the granting institution;
We desire a candidate with one or more of the following qualifications. We expect the successful candidate to have only some of these qualifications. If these are not evident in your resume be sure to discuss them in your cover letter:
Experience working with adults from diverse underrepresented and marginalized communities such as low income populations people with disabilities black and brown communities and those identifying as LGBTQIA;
3 years teaching ABE/GED to adult learners in a community college communitybased or undergraduate setting in facetoface virtual and online modalities;
3 years integrating transition to college concepts into classroom instruction and a commitment to teaching these skills and incorporating retention and progression strategies;
3 years integrating technology in instruction including Canvas or another learning management system;
Leadership in a community college or communitybased ABE/GED program;
Experience with contextualized curriculum design and assessment
ABOUT THE ELCAP DEPARTMENT:
The mission of the English Language Career and Academic Prep (ELCAP) department at Highline College is to prepare our students to be college and career ready by fostering a pursuit of lifelong learning innovative thinking problemsolving skills cultural responsiveness and contributions to the community.
We offer noncredit courses in ESOL English ABE/GED and Bilingual Spanish ABE/GED.As one of the largest programs in the state the department serves over 5000 linguistically and culturally diverse students per year. Our department is seeking innovative faculty members to support student learning through a commitment to studentcentered contextualized instruction and to help move our diverse students to achieve their education and career goals.

Full time Faculty teach any level of Spanish ABE/GED in ELCAP. Most classes include multiple levels of instruction.
The position includes:
Teaching in Spanish and English Adult Basic Education (ABE) and the four GED skills: mathematics language arts science and social studies plus transition to college skills and technology;
Providing support to parttime Spanish ABE/GED instructors;
Acting as a liaison with the local Spanish Community;
Teaching in the evening weekend or offcampus; inperson hybrid or online formats. (Currently there are no daytime Spanish GED classes.;
Keeping scheduled office hours maintain student records and submit reports and information as required;
Participating in curriculum development and instructional delivery that is responsive to changing technologies and current assessment practices;
Participating in department and college activities including collaborating with other faculty in program development advising students serving on campuswide committees attending division and department meetings and performing other duties as outlined in the Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement. Most of these activities will be held in English;
Eventually taking a turn serving as Department Coordinator (a 3year commitment on a rotating basis within the FT group) and other leadership roles within the department the division and the college.
