Job Description

NOTICE OF VACANCY

December 5 2024

POSITION: SENIOR NAVAL SCIENCE INSTRUCTOR (SNSI)

LOCATION: Calvert High School

POSITION SUMMARY: The SNSI is responsible for the instruction and operation of the NJROTC unit including teaching a multisubject curriculum instructing in military drill and extracurriculars and counseling students about the NJROTC program. The SNSI ensures policies and procedures relative to the administration of the NJROTC program are met. Under direction of the school principal the SNSI in conjunction with the NSI plans and provides appropriate learning experiences for students and provides an atmosphere and environment conducive to the intellectual physical social and emotional development of individuals to ensure student success.

REPORTS TO: School Principal or designee

EDUCATION CERTIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE:

At the time of application the candidate must:

  1. Have Senior Naval Science Instructor (SNSI) certification from the Department of the Navy.
  2. Have at least 20 years active duty service in the United State Navy or Coast Guard as a commissioned officer in grades W2 06.
  3. Have a bachelors degree from an accredited college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

KNOWLEDGE ABILITIES AND SKILLS: These are preemployment knowledge abilities and skills that apply to the Essential Job Functions. At the time of application the candidate must:

  1. Have demonstrated ability in written and oral communication.
  2. Have demonstrated ability to relate effectively to students teachers staff central office personnel and community members.
  3. Understanding of and ability to maintain rapport with persons from diverse cultural ethnic and racial groups.
  4. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Calvert County Public Schools may find appropriate and acceptable.
  5. Demonstrated success in accomplishing tasks akin to those responsibilities listed below.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  1. Complies with State and Federal regulations and Calvert County Public Schools policies and procedures.
  2. Develops selects and modifies instructional plans and materials to meet the needs of all students.
  3. Prepares and implements daily lesson plans incorporating effective instructional strategies aligned to school system priorities.
  4. Instructs in military drill.
  5. Attends and participates in professional development department meetings staff meetings and other requirements set out in the CCPS teacher contract.
  6. Monitors and evaluates student outcomes.
  7. Strives to improve instructional competence and teaching abilities.
  8. Attends Navysponsored training to keep abreast of current requirements of program management and new developments and organizations within the Navy.
  9. Requires NJROTC cadets to conduct themselves in a military manner at all times when under naval supervision.
  10. Ensures cadets observe the chainofcommand.
  11. Mentors cadets and assists with higher education or employment opportunities and goals.
  12. Plans instructs and supervises in conjunction with the NSI extracurricular activities for the NJROTC unit including color guard ceremonies drill team and rifle team competitions field trips basic leadership training camps etc.
  13. Ensures safety and well being of cadets is observed at all times during cadets participation in NJROTC activities.
  14. Requisitions and ensures proper care and inventory control/physical security of all governmentfurnished equipment as authorized such as uniforms training aides books drill rifles etc.
  15. Arranges for cleaning and tailoring of uniforms.
  16. Prepares periodic reports on program administration and logistics.
  17. Assesses unit processes to ensure NJROTC program objectives are met.
  18. Establishes contact with civic groups to obtain their recognition and support of the NJROTC Program.
  19. Establishes positive rapport with students staff parents and community members.
  20. Makes annual presentations about the NJROTC program to students attending feeder schools for the purpose of recruiting new cadets to the program.
  21. Maintains financial accounts of program operating budget.
  22. Prepares financial vouchers to the Navy for reimbursement of expenditures to the school made in support of the NROTC program.
  23. Informs students parents and community members of NJROTC activities and achievements through school publications as well as local news media.
  24. Serves on routine committees or extracurricular duties normally performed by and rotated equitably among other faculty members.
  25. Works collaboratively with the NSI on all facets of unit programming.
  26. Ensures nondiscriminatory practices are applied and take immediate corrective action when necessary.
  27. Thinks concentrates and interacts with others.
  28. Comes to work promptly every day.
  29. Works flexible hours as necessary.
  30. Works under stress and meets all deadlines.

OTHER DUTIES: Performs related work as required or assigned by the School Principal or designee

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Position requires significant periods of standing and walking and is performed in a typical school environment.

UNUSUAL DEMANDS: May be subject to a flexible work schedule.

FLSA STATUS: Exempt

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Twelve 12 month position with salary determined by the Department of Navy. An additional annual stipend is included for work beyond the normal school day. All employees are encouraged to have automatic payroll deposit.

EVALUATION: Performance will be evaluated in accordance with the policy on evaluation as established by the Calvert County Public Schools.

References must be directly related to educational experience and must include immediate supervisor.

State law requires that anyone hired after October 1 1986 who will have contact with school children must be fingerprinted and submit to a criminal background investigation. Federal law requires that a new employee must complete the Employment Eligibility Verification (Form I9 in person before beginning employment. Employment is conditional upon successful completion of a drug screen. Current employees of the Calvert County Public Schools are exempt from these requirements.

Pursuant to Section 6113.2 of the Education Article Annotated Code of Maryland House Bill 486 Child Sexual Abuse and Sexual Misconduct Prevention all applicants are required to report all former employers in which you may have had direct contact with minors.
