Job Description

Summary

Three Corrections Deputy positions are actively being recruited until filled. This notice is to seek applicants to participate in the Civil Service Examination for Corrections Deputy. All classified employees/positions within the Sheriffs Office require a Civil Service Examination.

When the position is open it will be a fulltime position sworn (Commissioned) position within the Island County Sheriffs Office. Deputy performs a variety of duties and responsibilities in the Corrections and Detention facility located at the Island County seat in the Town of Coupeville. Corrections Deputies work in a 24hour 7dayaweek maximumsecurity jail to maintain facility security by: receiving booking maintaining custody of escorting transporting caring for and overseeing offenders. They are also responsible to model prosocial behaviors and promote positive correctional practices.

This is a Continuous Examination process. Preemployment written and physical ability testing is offered continuously throughPublic Safety Testing.

PLEASE NOTE: You MUSTsuccessfully complete both the physical ability test (PAT) and the written examination offered by Public Safety Testing submit a Personal History Statement questionnaire and complete an Island County Application for Employment before your application will be deemed complete. Incomplete applications will not be considered and you will not be contacted.

APPLICATION PROCESS:

  1. Applicants must successfully complete the physical ability test (PAT) and written examination offered by Public Safety Testing. For information see must complete an Island County Application for Employment powered by NEOGOV as well upload to it the documents listed below in items 3 4 (and 5 if applicable). Have these documents ready prior to submitting your application so that you are able to upload them when requested while filling out the NEOGOV application. You may apply prior to taking the PAT and written testing with Public Safety Testing.
  2. Applicantsshould upload to your NEOGOV application a cover letter and a resume and any other documents you feel support your abilities to perform as a corrections deputy.
  3. Be sure to answer the Supplemental Questions.
  4. Applicants must download and complete this form Authorization to Release Information sign it then upload it to your NEOGOV application.
  5. If you are claiming Veterans Scoring Criteria Status upload a completed Claim for Veterans Criteria Status form and upload the requested documentation.
CIVIL SERVICE ELIGIBILITY REGISTER: The names of qualified candidates resulting from continuous examinations shall be entered on the eligible register. Certifications for appointments shall be from this register. Names of eligibles from successive examinations in the same program shall be entered on the eligible register at the appropriate places as determined by final grades.

CIVIL SERVICE SELECTION PROCESS: Vacancies are filled by the Civil Service rule of five with the top five eligibles forwarded to the appointing authority (Sheriff) for interview and background investigation as vacancies occur. Applicants given a conditional offer of employment are subject to further processes including polygraph examination psychological examination medical examination and background investigation. Applicants must pass a Civil Service examination; AND preemployment examinations including but not limited to a complete background investigation fingerprinting criminal record check polygraph examination a medical examination and a psychological evaluation.
All appointments are subject to successful completion of a one year probationary period as set forth in the Civil Service Rules for Island County Sheriffs Department Section 11.02 or its successor.

Knowledge Skills & Abilities

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: All applicants must meet minimum qualifications:
1 Attainment of the minimum age of 21 years. No maximum age requirement.
2 Possession of or ability to obtain prior to employment a valid Washington State Driver License.
3 Be a high school graduate or possess GED certification.
4 Be a United States Citizen or a lawful permanent residentwho can read and write the English language.*
5 Good physical and mental health.
6 Meet minimum weight and height standards.
7 Vision uncorrected 20/100 corrected to 20/20 on both eyes.
* RCW 41.14.100 An applicant for a position of any kind under civil service under the provisions of this chapter must be a citizen of the United States or a lawful permanent resident who can read and write the English language. An application for a position with a law enforcement agency maybe rejected if the law enforcement agency deems that it does not have the resources to conduct the background investigation required pursuant to chapter 43.101 RCW. Resources means materials funding and staff time. Nothing in this section impairs an applicants rights under state antidiscrimination laws.
