The Virginia Department of Social Services has an exciting opportunity to join our team as the Assistant Deputy Commissioner for Policy and Administration.

The Assistant Deputy Commissioner for Policy and Administration reports to the Deputy Commissioner and is responsible for assisting the Deputy Commissioner in leading the Policy and Administration Portfolio to support programs operations and processes across the Department. The Portfolio leads the Departments general services technology services financial administration legislative consulting and the development of trauma and resilience policy. The Portfolio works within a multimilliondollar operating budget and provides oversight and management of the Departments overall $2.9 billion budget and technology services and projects. This position leads special projects on behalf of the Deputy Commissioner and serves as a proxy to the Deputy Commissioner in their absence. The Assistant Deputy Commissioner for Policy and Administration partners with the Deputy Commissioner in setting the Portfolios vision performance metrics the portfolio agenda and the cultural atmosphere within which the Portfolio works. The Assistant Deputy Commissioner for Policy and Administration assists in the management of the Departments procurement budget and fiscal administration technology operations and property and facilities. The Assistant Deputy Commissioner for Policy and Administration assists with staff development activities across the Portfolio and serves as a liaison with other portfolios and divisions to manage conflict improve processes and outcomes and create clarity around shared work.

In addition the Assistant Deputy Commissioner for Policy and Administration assists the Deputy Commissioner in supporting all VDSS programmatic areas across all agency Portfolios and the Commissioners Office. This position requires advanced knowledge of management principles and practices and the ability to execute on those practices to direct manage and guide directors and senior executives through Policy and Administration activities and services throughout the agency. The Assistant Deputy Commissioner for Policy and Administration works with partners internal to the Portfolio and externally to strategize design and transition operations systems and processes to best serve the Department as a whole. The Assistant Deputy Commissioner for Policy and Administration can be called upon to regularly interact with senior agency staff other agency directors cabinet secretaries and other key administration officials. This position is also responsible and accountable for the core responsibilities related to program and workforce management quality assurance and assists the Deputy Commissioner in managing infrastructure operations enterprise systems project management and providing operational and strategic direction to the units and divisions of the Portfolio.

Additional Considerations
