Job Description:

The Department of English at the University of Florida Gainesville invites applications for a tenuretrack Assistant Professor position to teach in the BA and PhD programs in the field of African American Literary and Media Studies beginning August 16 2025. The time period is open. Areas of specialization might include Gender and Sexuality studies Diaspora studies Literary and Cultural studies AfroFuturism and/or AfroPessimism Digital Humanities and Environmental Humanities. We are particularly interested in candidates who specialize in issues of class gender sexuality and digital making. We welcome applications from all candidates with records of publication and teaching in the field. The normal teaching assignment is two courses per semester.

The successful candidate must be able to work with students faculty and staff from a wide range of social and cultural backgrounds. We are especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community. The university has a student body of over 49000 undergraduate graduate and first professional students including over 14500 minority students and 6000 international students.

UF is the states oldest largest and most comprehensive land grant university with an enrollment of over 50000 students and was ranked 7thin the country among public universities (US News and World Report 2025 rankings) and 1stamong public institutions in the Wall Street Journal 2023 survey. UF is located in Gainesville a city of approximately 150000 residents in NorthCentral Florida 50 miles from the Gulf of Mexico and 67 miles from the Atlantic Ocean and within a 2hour drive to large metropolitan areas (Orlando Tampa Jacksonville). Expected Salary:

The salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience and the compensation includes a full benefits package.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience teaching small large and online undergraduate and/or graduate classes
  • Background in Performance Studies Rhetoric and/or Argumentation
  • Background and/or experience working with local neighborhood community organizations
