The Advanced Electron Microscopy and Nanostructured Materials Group within the Division of Condensed Matter Physics and Materials Science at Brookhaven National Laboratory invites applications for highly motivated postdoctoral researchers to conduct advanced electron microscopy studies on quantum materials for neuromorphic computing.
The primary objective of this research is to explore quantum materials and their unique physical phenomena such as metalinsulator transitions chargespinlattice correlations and the critical role of defects and interfaces. Utilizing stateoftheart electron microscopy planned experiments will include atomicscale imaging high energyresolution electron energyloss spectroscopy (EELS) 4D scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and cryogenic microscopy enhanced by machinelearning and datadriven analysis techniques. Additionally the study will encompass electrically triggered events that mimic the voltagebased signaling of biological synapsesan essential characteristic for replicating neural network behavior.
The position offers a unique opportunity to engage in cuttingedge research at the intersection of quantum materials and advanced electron microscopy. Researchers will benefit from BNLs unparalleled suite of electron microscopy tools including aberrationcorrected instruments from JEOL Hitachi and Thermo Fisher as well as two upcoming monochromated Nion UHERMES microscopes scheduled for delivery in 2025. BNL also houses a laserfree ultrafast electron microscope for timeresolved diffraction and imaging under RF excitation. The research will be overseen by Professor Yimei Zhu and emphasizes strong collaborations within the DOEEFRC Quantum Materials for Energy Efficient for Neuromorphic Computing. The position is ideal for candidates eager to explore the intricate structureproperty relationships in quantum materials with a focus on neuromorphic applications.
Position Requirements:
Ph.D. in Condensed Matter Physics Materials Science or a related discipline.
Strong foundation in electron microscopy and structural characterization.
Experience in aberration corrected electron microscopy and/or monochromated electron energylossspectroscopy is highly desirable.
Demonstrated quantitative data analysis abilities.
Effective communication skills.
BNL policy requires that after obtaining a PhD eligible candidates for research associate appointments may not exceed a combined total of 5 years of relevant work experience as a postdoc and/or in an R&D position excluding time associated with family planning military service illness or other lifechanging events.
Candidates must have completed all degree requirements by the commencement of the employment.
The salary range for this position is $82250 $90000 / year. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidates qualification education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
