Job Description

Position Information

Under immediate supervision receives instruction in assigned curriculum of the Washoe County Sheriffs Office approved law enforcement academy and participates in training exercises designed to simulate situations encountered by a Washoe County Sheriffs Deputy and performs related work as required.

This is an Open Competitive / Countywide promotional recruitment being conducted to fill current vacancies at the Washoe County Sheriffs Office. The list established from this recruitment may be used to fill future vacancies as they occur. See the Conditions of Employment sectionfor information regarding eligibility requirements.

Must meet Nevada Commission on Peace Officers Standards and Training (P.O.S.T. requirements per Nevada Administrative Code (NAC) 289.110 as listed below:


A person may not be appointed to perform the duties of a peace officer if he or she has:


License or Certificate

A valid Nevada Class C drivers license is required at the time of appointment and for continued employment in this classification.

Conditions of Employment

Upon successful completion of the PPRT* (POST Physical Readiness Test) and online exam selected Candidates must:


Washoe County requires its employees to reside in the state of Nevada or neighboring California communities such as Truckee South Lake Tahoe or Susanville as of their first day of work.

Washoe County hires all new employees at the minimum rate of the salary range and eligible employees may receive an annual merit increase of 5 until they reach the maximum salary for the classification. Upon promotion current Washoe County employees are placed at the minimum rate of the salary range for the higher classification of the new position OR a promotional calculation whichever is greater.


What Happens Next

1. After your application in screened you will be notified via the email you provided if you do not meet the minimum requirements for the position. Those applicants who do not meet the qualifications have one 1 business day to file an appeal and request a review of their qualifications.


2. Applicants who meet the minimum requirements will receive an email invitation to take the PPRT which will be held in Reno NV.

PPRTs are tentatively scheduled to be held once during the months of February April and July.

Candidates who pass the PPRT will receive an email invitation to take an online exam administered via remote offsite testing by ProctorU. You will be notified by ProctorU when you can go online and schedule the date and time of your exam. If remote proctoring is not an option for you please

Veteran Point

Eligible veterans who were honorably discharged from the U.S. Armed Forces shall receive one 1 bonus point upon passing Open Competitive examinations only.
