Job Description

    POSITION SUMMARY/CLASS DESCRIPTION

    BRIEF DESCRIPTION:
    Teach after school tennis programs to children in a group setting.

    STARTING PAY HIRING RANGE
    DEPENDING ON QUALIFICATIONS
    $16.00 $32.00 per hour

    POSITION SUMMARY/CLASS DESCRIPTION:
    Howard County Department of Recreation & Parks is hiring staff for the after school tennis program located at various elementary and middle schools in the county. We are currently seeking a head and assistant coach/instructors for winter and spring classes. Programs run between the hours of 3pm6pm Monday through Friday. Candidates must be reliable mature courteous professional and have knowledge/experience playing or instructing tennis. Must have good communication skills be comfortable working with children with flexible work hours.

    If you are applying for the Assistant Coach position you must be at least 16 years of age. The starting hourly rate is $16/hr. depending on experience and certifications.

    If you are applying for the Head Coach position you must be at least 18 years of age. The starting hourly rate is $25/hr. depending on experience and certifications.

    DUTIES(all duties apply for specific tier and tiers above):

    Instructor/Coach 1:

    1. Teach organize and supervise participants in the teaching of tennis skills.
    2. Prepare site every day to ensure safety.
    3. Assist in setting up and taking down equipment and cleaning up area.
    4. Maintain friendly positive communication with participants parents and Program Coordinator.
    5. Follow the Departments Customer Service Standards as detailed in the Employee Manual.
    6. Complete and submit written reports as needed to program supervisor in a timely manner and attend scheduled meetings when necessary.
    7. Responsible for the safety and general welfare of the program and participants.
    8. Perform additional responsibilities as assigned by the program supervisor.
    9. Attend all required staff trainings and evaluations.
    10. If instructing youth programs must satisfy requirements of the Recreation and Parks Coaches Registry upon employment and prior to being scheduled by supervisor. Coaches Registry requirements include completion of the American Sport Education Program and recommended Concussion in Youth Sport exams.
    If instructing before/after school youth programs:
    Instructor/Coach 1a:
    1. Report to program at scheduled time and check in daily with school administration.
    2. Responsible for the safety and general welfare of the program and participants. Actively and responsibly supervise children at all times.
    3. Maintain friendly positive communication with participants parents school staff and Program Coordinator.
    Instructor/Coach 2 & 3:
    1. Supervise staff and volunteers.
    2. Coordinate daily lesson plans to show progression of skill.
    3. Responsible for keeping attendance records and necessary paperwork on site.
    4. Notify students of canceled classes and arrange for makeups due to cancelations.
    5. Provide drills for players to practice on their own between sessions.
    6. Appraise player skill levels at the end of the session.
    7. Keep in contact with HCRP staff to update class lists and/or to verify late registrants.
    If instructing before/after school youth programs:
    Instructor/Coach 2a:

    1. With an assistant lead a group of 20 children through the designed program curriculum.
    2. Responsible for maintaining and transporting program equipment to each program site and returning equipment to Program Coordinator at end of the program.
    3. Assist with program and staff feedback for program evaluations.
    SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS:
    • Sound philosophy of coaching and teaching with emphasis on fun and development of skills
    • Sufficient skill in explaining and demonstrating tennis skills; and knowledge of the basic and matchlike drills.
    • Ability to give positive feedback to correct errors and flaws in the students strokes.
    • Ability to develop a teaching plan and motivate players to improve their tennis playing skills.
    • Knowledge of current rules of the sport and the ability to interpret them.
    • Community CPR American Sport Education Program (ASEP) and Concussion Certificates.
    EXPERIENCE:
    Instructor/Coach 1: Participation in sports some background working with childrens programs. Meets Coaches Registry requirements. Preferably at least two years experience participating at a high school or college level or some paid or volunteer work as a tennis leader or recreation leader.
    Instructor/Coach 2: At least two years experience participating at a high school or college level. Three hundred hours or 3 years experience as a tennis instructor. CPR and First Aid certified.
    Instructor/Coach 3: At least two years experience participating at a high school or college level or a NTRP of 4.5 for at least two years. Six hundred hours or six years experience as a tennis instructor or combination of tennis instructor and coaching experience. CPR and First Aid certified.

    EDUCATION:
    Instructor/Coach 1: Background in Recreation and/or Physical Education.
    Instructor/Coach 2: Graduate of a tennis training program acceptable to the Department (preferable) or a similar training program.
    Instructor/Coach 3: Graduate of a tennis training program acceptable to the Department or an accredited National Teaching Program can substitute for six years of experience as a tennis instructor.

    RATE OF PAY: Contingent Salary commensurate with experience and certification.

    Instructor/Coach 1: Minimum wage to $16 per hour (Paraprofessional)
    Instructor/Coach 2: $16$18 per hour (Paraprofessional)
    Instructor/Coach 3: $18$32 per hour (Professional)

    If instructing before/after school youth programs:

    Instructor/Coach 1a: $16$25 per hour (Paraprofessional)
    Instructor/Coach 2a: $25$32 per hour (Paraprofessional)
