Summary

A postdoctoral fellow position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Jonathan Isaacs in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond VA. The successful candidate will participate in DoD and NIH funded projects in surgical improvements in nerve repair and enhancing functional recovery after nerve injuries. Candidates with commitment to research excellence and are technically skilled will be considered for the position.

Other job responsibilities include but are not limited to ordering supplies monitoring and disposal of biohazardous materials and chemical hazards organization of the laboratory environment and training undergraduate and graduate students and technicians in the laboratory.

Core Responsibilities

  1. Designing and conducting experiments in the laboratory
  2. Writing manuscripts and preparing presentations
  3. Training undergraduates and graduate students in the laboratory
Qualifications

Minimum Hiring Standards

  1. Candidates must have a Ph.D. in neuroscience or biomedical engineering (preferably recently graduated or with less than two 2 years of postdoctoral experience) and have handson experience in neuromuscular research medical device research and/or molecular biology of the neuromuscular system.
  2. The candidates should have excellent verbal and written scientific communication skills with experience in writing proposals and manuscripts for peerreviewed publications.
  3. Ability to design and perform experiments and to analyze and interpret data.
  4. Ability to maintain detailed documentation through electronic and notebook means.
  5. Ability to work independently as well as professionally and efficiently within the research group as a team player.
  6. Demonstrated experience working in and fostering an environment of respect professionalism and civility with a population of faculty staff and students from various backgrounds and experiences or a commitment to do so as a PostDoctoral Fellow at VCU

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in preclinical surgical procedures in small and large animal models.
  • Experience with nerve spinal cord and muscle tissue histology and immunohistochemistry.
  • Experience with electrophysiology techniques in the central and peripheral nervous system.
