Job Description

General Summary

Support the Department of Public Works in their mission to provide professional public works services to manage natural and built systems and foster community health safety and sustainability. This position is in the Facilities Maintenance Division andassigned to the Structural Crew.

This position may be filled as a Building Trades II or Building Trades III depending on qualifications. The preferred hiring ranges for this position is as follows:
  • Building Trades II: $18.50 $21.50 Hourly $38480.00 $44720.00 Annually)
  • Building Trades III: $20.50 $22.35 Hourly $42640.00 $46488.00 Annually)
As of March 28 2024 this position is in theLabor and Trades bargaining unit in accordance with the CitysCollective Bargaining Ordinance (Ordinance No. 22128. Starting pay for this position is based on applicable education experience and internal equity. Future wage adjustments are subject to terms and conditions of the collective bargaining agreement between the City and the exclusive bargaining representative. The parties are in the process of negotiating the collective bargaining agreement which will take effect on July 1 2025.

A Building Trades IIPerforms skilled work in the maintenance repair and installation of general building components fixtures and equipment to include commercial carpentry plumbing and painting/general maintenance for City and School facilities; does related work as required.Primarily and most frequently the work done here is under general supervision in the related functional areas.

A Building Trades IIIperforms skilled work in the maintenance repair and installation of general building components fixtures and equipment to include commercial carpentry plumbing doors/door hardware mechanical components and painting/general maintenance for City and School facilities.Primarily and most frequently this position works independently in the related functional areas and performs more advanced applications.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties

Duties include:

Education Experience and Skills

Skills:General knowledge of the practice methods materials equipment tools terminology and safety precautions of general building maintenance and repairs; ability to perform general building maintenance and repairs in a complete and quality manner; functional literacy; ability to read from sketches drawings plans or specifications; follow written and oral instructions; ability to estimate materials. Extensive knowledge of the maintenance repair and of the use of common hand and specialized power tools required in the work; general knowledge of the safe use and operation and maintenance of commercial building systems required in the work.

Building Trades III Minimum Qualifications:
Skills: Extensive knowledge of the maintenance repair and of the use of common hand and specialized power tools required in the work; general knowledge of the safe use and operation and preventive maintenance of mechanical equipment required in the work. Comprehensive knowledge of the practice methods materials equipment tools terminology and safety precautions of general building maintenance and repairs; ability to perform general building maintenance and repairs in a complete and quality manner; ability to read from sketches drawings plans or specifications; follow written and oral instructions; ability to estimate materials.

Physical Conditions & Additional Information

Physical tasks may include walking on uneven or rough surfaces; bending or stooping; working in confined spaces; working on roof tops; climbing a 10 foot ladder; performing repairs and maintenance from a 10 foot ladder; lifting and carrying items weighing 2050 pounds with occasional lifting of items weighing over 100 pounds.

Position may require employees to work a flexible schedule including evening and/or weekends. This position is subject to supporting weather and/or other emergency events and is subject to standby or oncall.
