Job Description

Contracts Assistant Penguin Publishing Group

We are currently seeking a Contracts Assistant to work with adult fiction and nonfiction imprints: Penguin Books Penguin Press Riverhead and Viking. The Contracts Department uses a businessminded approach to create and interpret legal documents that govern the publication of our books. This is a great opportunity to learn about the publishing business!

Responsibilities:

  • Providing administrative support to a Contracts Director
  • Revising/updating/finalizing contract records in our proprietary system
  • Conducting contract research
  • Drafting and negotiating contracts and contract amendments
  • Handling rights reversions
  • Fielding contracts inquiries from other departments such as Editorial Subsidiary Rights Royalties and others
  • Assisting and supporting department as needed

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree or equivalent work experience
  • Excellent attention to detail and the ability to multitask effectively and efficiently
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to follow up on tasks/projects with no reminder
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Interest in contracts and publishing
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Willingness to take on new projects while staying on top of all other tasks and responsibilities
  • Ability to handle the pressure of negotiating different managerial styles and personalities
  • Prior office experience a plus
  • Experience using SAP a plus
