General Overview:

The Division ofEnterprise Research Infrastructure & Services (ERIS )Senior Systems Engineer develops manages and fosters innovation of a widearray of infrastructure systems and storage platforms for Massachusetts GeneralHospital (MGH) Brigham and Womens Hospital (BWH) McLean and their affiliatesof the research/teaching hospitals of Harvard Medical School. Thisposition will have a broad range of responsibilities including: maintenancedevelopment and advancement of the research archival storage and ourvirtualization and cloud hosting platforms along with innovation in theirsuccessors as the platforms evolve. Operational responsibilities such assystems administration deployment capacity planning and expansion are alsokey to this role. The Senior Systems Engineer will additionallyparticipate as a subject matter expert in enterprisewide technology planningand architecture including direct consultation with customers and the CloudArchitect to drive the direction of the overall platform.

The incumbent is notexpected to be deeply knowledgeable in all areas but must demonstrate theability and desire to learn how to support a large and diverse researchdatadriven environment in its use of all general compute components.

Responsibilities:
  • Work within a focused team to support all aspects of computing infrastructure for biomedical research throughout systems life from design through operation and improvement.
  • Service Design
    • Work closely with Partners and affiliated researchers faculty and staff to assess needs to support cutting edge research.
    • Provide subject matter expertise and technical leadership in designing systems that meet the needs of researchers.
    • Apply best practices in storage and virtual environments.
    • Perform quality assurance reviews and IT product evaluations.
    • Develop sustainable and extensible shared support models and infrastructure for storage and virtualization services to the PHS R&D environment.
    • Work closely with Cloud Architect to provide documentation necessary to transition designs to services.
    • Develop monitoring tools for outage response and capacity planning
  • Service Transition
    • Automate Deploy and document systems designed in conjunction with the Cloud Architect.
  • Operations and Improvement
    • Manage and administer production and testing systems using automated techniques for orchestration and change/patch management
    • Maintain documentation as systems and services evolve.
    • Respond to outages and capacity needs as they arise.
    • Perform software and hardware upgrades to keep up with capacity and utility needs.
    • Provide internal consulting and support services to research groups across the environment.


  • Masters Degree in Computer Science or a related field or equivalent experience required.
  • 10 years of IT experience.
  • 8 years experience supporting systems in a biological medical or basic science research and development environments strongly preferred.
  • Experience providing infrastructure support for 3rdparty and opensource applications.
  • Systems administration using automated techniques & scripting required.
  • Certifications in VMWare and Linux strongly preferred.
Skills/Abilities/Competencies:
  • Demonstrated project management skills
  • Comfortable working in a dynamic environment and developing flexible solutions to meet evolving requirements
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills: Ability to communicate effectively with endusers business owners developers application analysts and systems administrators
  • Strong commitment to customer service
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize work requirements
  • Expert knowledge of all phases of clientserver application technology.
  • Expert knowledge and skill with server hardware storage and operating systems.
  • Expert knowledge of JBOD storage systems configuration. GlusterFS/Red Hat Gluster Storage used extensively knowledge preferred.
  • Expert knowledge of Network Operating Systems at the systems administration level: Linux; Experience with Windows Server and Solaris a plus.
  • Knowledge of Backup and Recovery technologies
  • Knowledge of OpenSource Web Server Systems: JBOSS Apache Tomcat
