The Summer Intern positions within the Housing & Residence Life department begins with training in May and typically runs through early August. All internships require some scheduled night and weekend obligations per semester. These obligations can be associated with but not limited to: group movein/moveout training duty rotation. As with any livein position staff members are also responsible for handling crises as they occur. This internship will average 29 hours per week over the course of the summer.

Three different openings are available for the Summer Intern position within Housing and Residence Life. The job responsibilities staff expectations and compensation are similar. However each position has a different focus area. The following focus areas are below:

*Camps Conferences & Orientation: This Summer Intern reports to a Residence Life Coordinator (RLC) and collaborates with their supervisor to shape the environment and experiences of residents and guests through our Camps Conferences & Orientation summer experiences. Tasks can be associated with but not limited to: directly supervising 68 undergraduate student staff members welcoming incoming first year students setting up building decorations facility preparations for incoming groups.


*Residential Communities: This Summer Intern reports to a Residence Life Coordinator (RLC) and collaborates with their supervisor to shape the environment and experiences of residents and guests through our residential communities that have students enrolled in summer academic courses. Tasks can be associated with but not limited to: directly supervising 68 undergraduate student staff members developing events implementing the summer engagement model facilitating policy violations.


*Special Projects: This Summer Intern reports to a Residence Life Coordinator (RLC) and collaborates with their supervisor to shape the environment and experiences of residents and guests through our Special Projects throughout the summer. Tasks can be associated with but not limited to: directly supervising 24 undergraduate student staff members fall training development key audits facility walk throughs fall movein preparations.

Preferred QualificationsThe qualifications major areas of responsibility expectations for the Summer Intern position include but are not limited to the following items:

Must be able to effectively work with university students demonstrate a sense of job responsibility and maturity and show evidence of leadership skills
Preference will be given to candidates with prior residence hall leadership experience and/or are pursuing a graduate degree in student personnel or counseling.
Other qualifications include:
Ability to organize tasks prioritize duties and effectively complete the many components of the job
Skills to effectively lead and facilitate group discussions; understanding of ethical situations; ability to think critically lead smallgroup training sessions engage in public speaking and design/conduct experiential learning programs; knowledge of residential livinglearning philosophy
Ability to interact with a diverse student populationEssential Functions / Job Duties:
  • 50 Job Responsibilities The Summer Intern position is a 29hour per week liveon graduate student staff position of the Department of Housing and Residence Life at the University of West Florida. The number of staff under the Summer Intern varies by year. The Summer Intern will be supervised by a Residence Life Coordinator (RLC) and will work closely with Central Housing and other various campus partners. Listed below are both specific job duties of the position as well as minimum professional standards expected of all Housing & Residence Life employees. These responsibilities encompass student and community development initiatives both proactive and reactive that directly influence the success of our residential students. They also detail administrative responsibilities foundational to this success. Finally they exhibit behaviors that demonstrate professionalism and a commitment to the values of the department. These responsibilities include: Attending various Summer Intern sessions and meetings Attend any training sessions required and assist with training summer staff and orientation leaders Supervising student staff including weekly staff meetings and individual supervision meetings Organizing building operations including working with campus partners working with guest and staff assignments coordinating their checkin and checkout processes room walkthroughs key inventories and communicating with maintenance staff regarding damages and necessary cleaning Assisting with billing and paperwork Setting the desk and duty schedules Holding weekly office hours Attending weekly department staff meetings and supervision meetings Participating in the duty rotation for campus Assisting with central office projects such as oversight of various summer facilities projects being part of the Fall Opening Day committee helping with assignments and marketing Assisting with opening and closing of summer residential area(s) Assisting with various other summer projects committees and tasks (Essential)
  • 50 Overarching Staff Expectations Maintain the everyday running of a designated residence hall/apartment complex(es) Serve as an appropriate role model by following policies and procedures accepting and completing assigned responsibilities and encouraging participation in Housing and Residence Life activities Practice ethical stewardship of university resources Demonstrate a commitment to diversity by promoting and attending campus and community multicultural events facilitating professional development with student staff presenting on diversity or implementing strategies. Demonstrate a consistent willingness to work with individuals from a diverse variety of backgrounds and social identities. Create and maintain positive professional relationships within the department and across the university Perform all expected duties of the position and additional duties as assigned or related to community development by the RLC AD and/or other departmental staff (Essential)
