Job Description

The Healthcare Approaches to Justice Collaborative at Montclair State University is currently seeking out a doctoral fellow who can collaborate with a team of individuals on research at the nexus of criminal justice and health with a focus on the creation and evaluation of HospitalBased Violence intervention programs (HVIPs) and CommunityBased Violence Intervention (CBVI) programs. The applicant would become a core member of the team looking to establish a center on healthcare approaches to justice at Montclair State University.

About the Collaborative: The Healthcare Approaches to Justice Collaborative is dedicated to enhancing programs conducting research and advocating for policies that uplift communities at the intersection of healthcare and justice. Our vision is centered on fostering equitable just and healthy communities. Our efforts specifically target the Social Determinants of Health encompassing economic stability neighborhood and built environment social and community context as well as access to quality education and healthcare. We champion the implementation of a Coordinated Community Response utilizing established models and frameworks such as the social ecological framework communitybased participatory research and translational research. A traumainformed approach guides every aspect of our work with a commitment to advancing equity for all including historically underserved populations affected by persistent poverty and inequality. We bring together a multidisciplinary team. Our collaborators include Biostatisticians Physicians Computer Scientists Earth & Environmental Scientists and Justice Research Scientists.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop a working knowledge of study protocols and the HVIP program and policies;

  • Complete all required training including (but not limited to) Health Insurance Portability Accountability Act (HIPAA) and Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI)

  • Assisting in the procurement of funding from both external and internal sources

  • Leading and participating in regular meetings with the initiatives research and development team

  • Leading and collaborating on research studies aimed at understanding healthcare approaches to justice

  • Conduct interviews with HVIP clients HVIP/CBVI staff members community members and law enforcement

  • Delegating and collaborating on tasks with graduate students and other team members

  • Writing research and related reports

  • Developing partnerships with schoolbased administrative teams and other community partners to build trusting sustainable relationships.

Applications are encouraged from current Ph.D. candidates in criminal justice criminology psychology social work public health/policy or a related field. Preference will be given to candidates with advanced training in qualitative data analysis experience working with vulnerable populations and to those with research interests in healthcare approaches to justice with a knowledge of or practical experience with program evaluation.

The initial appointment will be a parttime remote position for Spring and Fall 2025 (contingent on satisfactory performance) with the potential for continuation contingent on the candidates productivity and the availability of funding.
