WHATS THE JOB
Reporting to the Facilities Manager the Building Systems Technician (Plumbing) is responsible for plumbing maintenance (preventative corrective and immediate repair) and mechanical work. This position works as part of a team and crosstraining/maintenance work outside of the primary plumbing trade is expected. Examples of work outside of the primary plumbing trade include snow removal moving furniture and event setup.
Specific Duties and Accountabilities
- Installs repairs and maintains plumbing and heatingrelated devices such as but not limited to pumps water distribution piping valves fixtures back flow preventers and drainage interceptors.
- Regularly reacts to plumbing emergencies including but not limited to leaks clogged drains and heating repairs.
- Performs preventive maintenance tasks on designated plumbing and heatingrelated equipment.
- Makes recommendations for upgrading plumbing systems based on best economical/professional judgement.
- Performs routine maintenance checks on building systems including but not limited to inspection maintenance and replacement of belts/filters.
- Carries out preventative maintenance and minor repairs to mechanical systems as required.
- Performs all duties in accordance with the Nova Scotia Occupational Health & Safety Act as well as university and government rules and regulations.
- Maintains a clean work environment in the Facilities Shop and in the areas of all work projects.
- Assists outside contractors/Dalhousie with steam heat system problems.
- On call duties 24 hours per day 7 days per week on rotation.
- Performs other related duties as assigned by the Facilities Manager.

Qualifications :
WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR
- Valid Plumbing Certification (as recognized by the Nova Scotia Apprenticeship Agency). Red Seal Designation is mandatory.
- Must possess a valid Class 5 Nova Scotia drivers license and provide a clean drivers abstract.
The following certifications are considered an asset:
- Certified Building System Technician
- Occupational Health & Safety Training Certification
- WHMIS
- Fall Arrest
- CPR/First Aid
- JGL & Scissor Lift Certified
- HVAC and heating experience
- Building Automation experience
- Backflow Prevention certification
- Steamfitter certification
- Ability to operate heavy machinery for snow removal
- Computer proficiency
