Job Description

General Summary


JeffersonMadison Regional Library is seeking candidates to be considered for the position ofSupervising Reference Librarianfor the Northside Librarywho are highly motivated and who support JMRLs Mission Statement to foster personal growth and lifelong learning for all by connecting people with ideas information and each other.

The preferred starting salary for this position is $21.03 hourly $43742.40 annually). Starting offer is based on applicable education experience and internal equity. This position is responsible for supervising Reference Services at the Northside library and upholding a strong public service orientation. The individual in this role should have a solid understanding of library practices knowledge of reference resources (including online databases and other internet resources) and familiarity with Windows and Microsoft Office Suite. Responsibilities include but are not limited to providing readers advisory and reference services assisting patrons of all ages with the use of library resources and equipment performing some circulation tasks and general library duties assisting with administrative tasks and may serve as the acting branch manager. Education Experience and Skills

Minimum Qualifications: Candidates may qualify by demonstrating the required knowledge and skills outlined for the job through experience(s) other than formal education.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • 2 years of supervisory experience
Certifications/Licenses/Other Requirements:
  • Required to successfully pass a preemployment background check.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS ABILITIES AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS:
Job Knowledge:
  • Thorough knowledge andunderstanding of library practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of reference resources (including online databases and other internet resources) and familiarity with Windows and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Familiarity with automated library systems.
  • Knowledge of general reference sources and a willingness to read a variety of ageappropriate books to enhance readers advisory skills.
  • Knowledge of and ability to use librarys print and electronic resources.
  • Knowledge of JMRL and national OCLC policies and procedures associated with ILL.
Reading:
  • Intermediate: Ability to read and understand written materials such as newspapers technical journals multistep instruction manuals and reference materials.
Writing:
  • Intermediate: Ability to organize data and write clear and concise reports business letters explanations and summaries with proper format punctuation spelling and grammar using all parts of speech.
Math:
  • Basic: Ability to perform the four basic arithmetic operations (addition subtraction multiplication division).
Communication Skills:
  • Intermediate: Ability to develop effective working relationships with library staff managers volunteers and the public. Provide and receive complex information. May include interactions that involve stressful negative situations requiring significant tact and the ability to diffuse aggressive behavior and reach consensus. Elements of persuasion may be necessary to gain cooperation understanding and acceptance of ideas.
Independence and DecisionMaking:
  • Requires Limited Direction: Normally completes work according to their own judgment requesting supervisory assistance occasionally. Manages special projects with little oversight and assignments may be reviewed upon completion. Performance reviewed periodically.
Technical Skills:
  • Skilled: Comprehensive practical knowledge of a technical field with use of analytical judgment and decisionmaking abilities appropriate to the assigned and apparent job responsibilities. Intermediate skill in Microsoft Office applications and/or departmental software.
Fiscal Responsibilities:
  • May receive and disburse funds and prepare money for deposit. May be responsible for planning and tracking a programming budget under the supervision of the Branch Manager or Adult Programming and Reference Services Manager.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • Supervises and monitors performance for a regular group of employees or department. Provides input on hiring discipline work objectives/goals performance evaluation and work assignments.
Other Characteristics:
  • Strong public service orientation.
  • Working with others as part of a team.
  • Performing multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • May require dealing with angry frustrated and/or upset individuals.
