What you bring to SBHG(qualifications):
High School Diploma (or equivalent) PLUS completion of some collegelevel (or equivalent) coursework in sociology psychology mental illness and its treatment health care system counseling and/or peer counselingor
High School Diploma (or equivalent) PLUS six months of fulltime experience performing nonprofessional consumerdirected services in mental health health care counseling peer counseling education advocacy or other social services agency/organization serving people with disabilities.
Valid California Drivers License required.
How you will make a difference(Job Overview):
Peer and Family Advocates serve as role models companions educators and advocates to our clients. Although not professional counselors Peer and Family Advocates are treatment team members trained in basic counseling skills and are people who understand living with a disability having been there. (Because of the population served disabilities include neurological disabilities psychiatric disabilities cognitive or learning disabilities and/or recovery from substance abuse. Help clients explore options given their available resources and formulate problemsolving plans. Research and offer resources that are relevant to the clients treatment goals and planning; connecting them directly to services being the main priority; including but not limited to placement in higherlevel of care facilities. Serve as informal advocates offering clients the opportunity to discuss issues surrounding relationships feelings attitudes personal goals and individual rights. Using the Recovery Model outlined in the MHSA (Mental Health Services Act) the goal of the Peer and Family Advocate is to empower consumers in creating a hopeful future where they can experience the possibilities of getting a job earning a diploma and having an apartment of their own. The Peer and Family Advocate will support clients in moving toward recovery. This position may also assist with transportation for the client(s) as required and/or be asked to escort clients to offsite facilities (i.e. medical) and remain and supervise said clients. Also Peer and Family Advocates will provide safety and security to clients and staff as required.

Clients may stay up to 24 hours
BHUCC equipped to serve 12 adults (ages 18 and up) and 6 adolescent (ages 13 to 17

Grade spread 18.06 25.29(In accordance with California law the salary grade for this position is listed above. Starting pay within the grade is determined based on experience internal equity and other factors permitted by law.
