Job Description

Job Summary

The Director of Student Involvement reports to the Associate Vice President and Dean of Students. The Director is responsible for providing visionary leadership by keeping up to date with new trends and theories in the field of Student Affairs. The Director is responsible for the overall management planning administration and evaluation of the departments programs services facilities and budgets. The Director also provides leadership in the design and implementation of Student Involvement department initiatives and programs which include but are not limited to cocurricular programs and leadership development student organization services and support for approximately 400 student clubs and organizations universitywide student success and engagement activities and international student programming services. Additionally the Director works closely with the student government and provides support and advising to various officers and/or committees as needed.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the daytoday operations of four major functional areas (student clubs and organizations fraternity and sorority life leadership development and campuswide and international student programming)
  • Manage the recognition process for approximately 400 student clubs and organizations
  • Ensure quality consultation support and development are provided for their officers regarding recognition funding opportunities club operations and event planning
  • Ensure quality support and training are provided to club and organization advisors
  • Provide leadership for annual conferences and retreats for student leaders officers and fraternity and sorority life.
  • Oversee the expansion and continued development of the leadership development program programs for commuter students and the programs for international students
  • Develop and implement policies procedures and protocols for all department programs
  • Manage the SI departmental budget including making allocation decisions pertaining to program areas identification of funding needs and resources and the allocation of funds to the Recognized Student Organizations
  • Recruit and hire highly qualified staff as positions become available
  • Train and develop staff informally and formally
  • Serve as a representative of SI and/or Student Affairs to various committees task forces and workgroups such as the Instruction and Student Affairs Committee for the Academic Senate the CSU student organization funding workgroup assessment committee and others
  • Serve as an advisor to Associated Student officers and committees such as the Finance Committee as requested
  • Work closely with the Office of Student Conduct and Ethical Development on issues regarding student clubs and organizations

Knowledge Skills & Abilities

  • Broad knowledge of student development theory issues and trends in the field
  • Knowledge of best practices in student affairs in general and student involvement in particular
  • Demonstrated leadership in the development and management of a comprehensive student affairs program preferably involving programming student organization advising student government advising leadership development and Greek Life
  • Demonstrated ability in assessment of student development programs in an educational setting and use of assessment results to make changes in programs and services to students
  • Knowledge of advising student leaders and developing and facilitating student leadership experiences including workshops conferences and retreats
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise a sizeable and complex professional support and student staff in a flexible and supportive manner
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and manage a sizeable departmental budget in the context of a complex system of fiscal rules and procedures including the ability to seek outside funding sources under constrained circumstances
  • Demonstrated ability to write concisely and clearly and to speak effectively
  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate and collaborate with diverse groups
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects at various stages of development
  • Crisis management skills

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelors Degree
  • Five years of professional experience in a University setting
  • Experience working with a large diverse population in an urban setting
  • Experience administering areas in the portfolio: Student Organizations Campus Programming Greek life and Leadership Programming
  • Experience in Student Development theory as it relates to student groups programming and leadership
  • Experience with understanding risk management for student groups and campus programs; crisis management
  • Experience supervising and developing fulltime staff and budget management
  • Experience in assessment of cocurricular programs and leadership

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters Degree in higher education or similar field or Ed.D.
  • 5 years of HE student programming and leadership development
  • 5 years of supervising professional level staff

Compensation

Classification: Administrator III
Anticipated Hiring Range: $11207/month $11498/month
CSU Salary Range: $6891/month $22119/month

The final hiring salary will be commensurate with experience.
