Other conditions: Extramural funds. To begin in late November 2024 or soon thereafter. Renewal of appointment is contingent upon availability of funds program/operational needs and satisfactory performance.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Under the direction of the Principal Investigators (PIs) serve as a STEM Community Coordinator for extramurally funded project(s) related to improving STEM education for Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Island PreK5 students with and without disabilities.
  • Develop implement and assess culturally responsive STEM curriculum and activities that contribute to best practices in the field.
  • Review refine and copy edit existing project developed lessons activities and other programming.
  • Develop lead/colead and teach math and science workshops training and programs to teachers parents and other community members.
  • Develop and implement recruitment programs and activities for schools students and parents and mentors.
  • Work with partner and contracted organizations to plan and carry out STEM enrichment summer camps and STEMfocused community service learning events.
  • Participate in evaluation activities and data collection.
  • Maintain a research/scholarly profile related to STEM and community work as a profession.
  • Contribute to the department university profession and community through serving on committees volunteering as a journal reviewer etc.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
  1. Masters degree from a college or university of recognized standing inSTEM fields STEM education Special Education or a related field.
  2. Facility in the techniques of STEM education.
  3. Accuracy alertness and adaptability.
  4. Professionalism in meeting and conferring with others.
  1. Experience developing handson STEM lessons activities or curriculum for a wide range of audiences including elementary school students with and without disabilities.
  2. Experience conducting STEM activities within school afterschool or community center setting.
  3. Experience teaching/tutoring STEM activities to students who are from underrepresented minority groups.
  4. Experience working with students with disabilities and diverse needs.
  5. Experience coordinating a group of diverse people for meetings collaborative work or other activities.
  6. Basic understanding of educational or social science research practices pertaining to research implementation data collection and dissemination.
  7. Demonstrated ability to work independently on assigned tasks prioritize tasks and see tasks through completion.
  8. Availability to work outside of the normal working hours including evening weekends and holidays as needed.
  9. Ability to travel independently and in a timely manner to various geographical locations. Requirement may be fulfilled by a valid Hawaii Drivers license (Class 3 comparable drivers license or other means of transportation which meets position needs.

Desirable Qualifications
  1. Demonstrated experience in planning organizing and implementing facetoface and online professional development/workshops for tutors/mentors teachers and/or parents.
  2. Demonstrated teaching experience of elementary grade level students with disabilities or those who are struggling learners.
  3. Experience teaching or conducting outreach STEM activities to Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders.
  4. Experience differentiating activities to meet the needs of diverse learners.
  5. Course work in or solid understanding of Hawaiian history culture and language.
  6. Familiarity and experience in collaborating with Schools and Native Hawaiian organizations in Hawaii.
  7. Demonstrated understanding and application of effective math and science teaching/engagement strategies beyond the classroom.
  8. Familiarity with computer science lessons.
  9. Experience in writing technical reports journal articles and competitive grant applications.
