Job Description

Summary

The Assessment Policy Development and Evaluation Unit (APDE) of Public Health Seattle & King County (PHSKC) is looking for an Intern III Graduate Intern (Graduate Evaluation Intern) to support a qualitative evaluation of a Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Public Health Infrastructure Grant (PHIG). The Public Health Infrastructure Grant (PHIG) from the CDC is a grant that serves to support state and local health departments diversify their workforces and strengthen foundational services. Examples of PHSKCs PHIG activities include improving onboarding for new employees developing surge plans for emergency preparedness and streamlining data for care and resource planning for PHSKCs clinics. PHSKC wants to understand the successes and challenges of working with community and internal partners to design and implement process improvements in PHSKCs workforce and foundational services. The evaluation includes the following activities: working with community partners and PHSKC staff to improve community experiences of contracting engaging community partners in identifying and prioritizing policy priorities for King County and collaborating with communities and PHSKC staff to cocreate public health information and educational materials.


This position reports to the PHIG Lead Evaluator. The intern will work with the Lead Evaluator and Program team to engage in a range of evaluation activities such as selecting data collection methods designing data collection tools engaging in data collection analysis and dissemination. The intern will also assist in collecting required performance measures. This internship is anticipated to last up to 12 months (with a possibility of an extension) and with an expected start date in May.


Learning Objectives

  • In 3 months the intern will be able to learn to work collaboratively and effectively with diverse professional teams. Theyll be able to describe a highlevel overview of Public Health Seattle & King Countys Public Health Infrastructure Grant activities.

  • In 6 months the intern will be able to gain insight into designing and implementing qualitative evaluation in practice; analyze and interpret qualitative data to inform public health practice; and select and design communication strategies for different audiences.

  • By the end of the 12 months the intern will be able to design and implement qualitative data collection methods for a large departmentwide evaluation in consultation with the Lead Evaluator. Theyll be able to effectively communicate with different audiences in written and visual formats as well as through oral presentations.


Background

The Health Sciences Division provides robust assessment and evaluation work and population health strategies to influence public health with a focus on community conditions through data evidence and emerging best practices in partnership with the community. The Health Sciences Division serves toward working with community partners to address the root cause of health disparities and improve population health outcomes; providing the functions of assessment epidemiology and program evaluation; and advancing health equity in the community through strategies at the individual and environmental levels that promote protective factors and reduce risk for chronic disease injury and violence. This position is based in the Assessment Policy Development and Evaluation (APDE) unit of the Health Sciences Division. APDE is a nationally recognized leader in community health assessment; providing health assessment data and analysis to inform planning policies and actions; and developing innovative interventions to improve the health of King County residents. The typical work schedule for this position is Monday through Friday for up to 19 hours per week. The intern and supervisor will determine a schedule together that fits both academic schedules and business needs. This internship is anticipated to start in May and isexpected to last up to 12 months (with the possibility of a second year). This position is FLSA nonexempt and is overtime eligible.


Work Location

The primary location for this position will be based at the Chinook Building 401 5th Avenue Seattle WA 98104. This will be a hybrid position with most of the candidates time spent virtually. However the intern may be required to attend in person activities and events.


Employees must reside in Washington state and within a reasonable distance to their King County worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements.


Teleworking:

Some of the work associated with this position will be performed through teleworking and will report to office location and to meetings as needed. Travel to other work locations may be necessary. Employees will have access to shared workspaces at various King County facilities. Employees will be provided with a County issued laptop and must maintain a workspace with an internet connection where they can reliably perform work and remain available and responsive during scheduled work hours. To support employees during this time King County has a robust collection of tools and resources to support working remotely.
