Job Description

JOB TITLE: CREE LANGUAGE TEACHER

LOCATION: WHITEFISH LAKE FIRST NATION #128

REPORTS TO: PAKAN SCHOOL PRINCIPAL

TERM LENGTH: 1 YEAR TERM CONTRACT: FULLTIME EMPLOYMENT

Job Summary:

Whitefish Lake First Nation #128 a Cree community in northeastern Alberta is seeking a highly motivated visionary and creative Cree Language Teacher.

Key Responsibilities:

Coordinate language and cultural programming and curriculum development and teach the Cree language

Mentor and provide support to all school staff in Cree language development

Assist in developing a positive image of Cree Language and culture to the school and community

Provide student assessment and reports in accordance with the school schedule/calendar

Assist with cultural events

Able to make connections between Cree language learning and landbased learning

Maintains a high standard in student records and student learning

Other duties as assigned by the Principal

Qualifications & Skills:

Fluency in the Cree language Nehiyawewin

Bachelor of Education degree with specialization in Indigenous Language studies or Related Studies

Proven successful experience in Cree language teaching and strong classroom management skills

In possession of a valid Alberta Interim or Permanent Teaching Certificate

History of ongoing professional and personal development to support Cree Language instruction

Submission of a current Intervention Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check

Is able to work collaboratively with other First Nation language teachers in the region

Extensive knowledge of computer applications programs and technologies

Working Conditions:

Opportunity to reside in teacherage if available

Occasional evening or weekend work for planning or supporting community events

Understanding of Indigenous cultures language traditions and sensitivity to the needs of the community (preferred).
