JOB TITLE: GUIDANCE COUNSELOR

DEPARTMENT: School/Student Services

GRADE: State Salary Scale

FLSA: Exempt

REPORTS TO: Principal

SUPERVISES: None

RECEIVES DIRECTION FROM: Director of Student Services

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 10 months

QUALIFICATIONS: Masters Level School Counselor License

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. This list is meant to be representative not exhaustive. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

    1. Provides direct services through the Guidance Curriculum Individual Student Planning and Preventive and Responsive Services
    2. Provides program management system support and accountability
    3. Establishes the school counseling program and develops activities and resources to implement and evaluate the program
    4. Involves other school staff in making decisions about the school counseling program
    5. Provides individual and group counseling services to meet the developmental preventive and remedial needs of students
    6. Consults with students parents teachers and other school and community personnel to assist in meeting the needs of students
    7. Coordinates all counseling services for students and assists with the coordination and implementation of student services in the school
    8. Assists teachers with the Guidance Curriculum
    9. Accurately interprets test results and other student data
    10. Assists teachers with the educational placement of students by using appropriate educational assessment strategies
    11. Adheres to ethical standards of the counseling profession and abides by the laws policies and procedures that govern schools
    12. Participates in professional associations and upgrades professional knowledge of skills when needed

  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by supervisor

The major physical and cognitive requirements listed below are applicable to the Guidance Counselor job classification within Bertie County Schools.

Work in this classification is considered light physical work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects.

Must be able to:

  1. Prepare read and comprehend a variety of job related forms reports spreadsheets maps plans records documentation and correspondence in all languages required by the job
  2. Understand and conform to all rules of punctuation grammar diction and style
  3. Speak to individuals or groups of people with poise voice control and confidence
  4. Respond adequately to inquiries or complaints
  5. Write using standard convention in all languages required by the job
  6. Apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to define problems collect data establish facts and draw valid conclusions
  7. Apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written oral or diagrammatic form
  8. Communicate effectively and efficiently in all languages required by the job using whatever communication device or system is required (telephone Braille)
  9. Use/interpret job related terminology mathematical formulas and functions effectively and efficiently
  10. Deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions
  11. Perform under stress deal with persons acting under stress and adapt when confronted with emergency situations
  12. Be sensitive to cultural differences among individuals and groups of persons
  13. Operate a motor vehicle
  14. Operate/use a variety of automated office machines and other office equipment
  15. Operate/use a variety of printing/graphic arts machines
  16. Operate/use a variety of audiovisual/electronic machines and devices
  17. Operate/use a variety of communication machines/equipment/devices
  18. Operate/use a variety of job specific machines/equipment

The noise level in the work environment is usually minimal. The work is performed in the school.
