Job Description

The Office of Academic Advising (OAA) provides academic advising support to undergraduate students and faculty advisors through oneonone meetings classroom visits and group workshops and training. OAA supports academic recovery (probation) students students exploring their major options incoming transfer students and students who have received Daniels Fund awards and Denver Scholarship Foundation awards. OAA supports the DU Academic Advising Model by leading central communications to department chairs more than 300 faculty advisors and more than 15 staff advisors and through quarterly meetings. OAA works closely with the Director of Faculty Advising to support the unique needs of department chairs.

Housed within Academic Affairs the Office of Student Success of which Academic Advising is a part promotes academic excellence engagement and student thriving by empowering students to make the most of their experience at the University of Denver. Academic Affairs collaborates with the schools divisions academic departments the faculty and student life to develop programs curricula and experiences that support inspire and challenge students. Position Summary

Through daily meetings with students this position works with all undergraduate students to ensure their transition persistence and success at the University. This position demonstrates a commitment to the principles of inclusive excellence and diversity through embedding inclusiveness throughout programs services and initiatives. This position supports continuity of office operations by maintaining accurate documentation records and external materials.

Essential Functions

Academic Advising

  • Responsible for implementing appropriate office processes and practices to support and inform a proactive advising model. This includes:
    • Holistically advising a quarterly load of approximately 300 undergraduate students with diverse backgrounds and educational needs regarding degree planning course registration major/minor exploration and understanding the Common Curriculum and general undergraduate requirements in the effort to ensure their transition persistence and success at DU.
    • Providing information and guidance on academicrelated administrative processes such as Academic Exceptions Academic Standards Course Overloads and Leaves of Absence.
    • Proactively tracking outreaching to and working with students identified through early intervention systems (i.e. highrisk first generation students who have not been in for an appointment students on academic probation etc..
    • Coordinating and/or participating in the advisingrelated role of New/Transfer Student Discoveries Orientation program.
    • Connecting students to student support resources offices and departments across campus as needed to support holistic student development and success;
    • Participating in the assessment and evaluation of academic policies services and programs.
    • Maintaining thorough accurate pertinent documentation of student records and individual advising sessions within FERPA guidelines.

Office Collaboration

  • Serves as a liaison and fosters intentional relationships with other departments and faculty advisors at the direction of Office leadership
  • Participate in unit department and/or campuswide committees.
  • Updates the quarterly dropin advisor schedule.
  • Maintains updates and oversees Academic Advising departmental website content
  • Maintains departmental contact list and ensures website content is accurate and in compliance with Registrars office policies and procedures.
  • Plans and implements programs to support the academic progress of undeclared probation and new students (ie major fair).
  • Regularly updates training materials for incoming academic advisors

Professional Development

  • Engages in ongoing professional development activities including but not limited to memberships in professional organizations such as NACADA; attendance at conferences workshops division and department training sessions.

Advising Model Support

  • At the direction of Office leadership develops trainings and resources for staff and faculty advisors across campus.
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Supervises and mentors student employees as needed
  • Assists in the training and mentoring of new academic advisors.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Enthusiasm for the field of academic advising.
  • Strong ability to work independently and as part of a professional team.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment in prioritizing tasks and meeting deadlines.
  • Knowledge of learning strategies academic coaching developmental advising models and student development theories.
  • Understanding of how advising fits into the overall mission of the University
  • Understanding of the organizational culture and a desire to work toward continuous improvement of the culture of advising
  • Decision making: Strong ability to make complex independent decisions
  • Communication skills: Excellent written communication and speaking skills. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from students University colleagues and the general public over the telephone in writing and in person.
  • Interpersonal skills: A proven ability to work well and nurture relationships with the advising team faculty and staff. Successful experiences in conflict resolution.
  • Detail Oriented: Process oriented thinking and ability to pay careful attention to detail.
  • Organization and time management skills: Ability to juggle a wide variety of tasks and effectively prioritize responsibilities.
  • Team oriented: Demonstrated ability to work well within a team with a high level of professionalism.
  • Willingness and commitment to involvement with the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA).

Required Qualifications

  • Masters degree or relevant graduate degree; or Bachelors degree and 3 years of related experience.
  • 2 years of fulltime postbaccalaureate advisingrelated experience in an educational setting.
  • Experience working with faculty staff families and students.
  • Demonstrated experience and commitment to diversity equity and inclusion

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters degree in counseling social work psychology or education.
  • Excellent community building and human relations skills
  • Strong organizational skills; commitment to providing quality services
  • Experience with programming and outreach
  • Proficiency in Banner

Working Environment

  • Standard office environment.
  • Unexpected interruptions occur often and stress level is moderate to high.
  • Noise level is quiet to moderate.

Physical Activities

  • Ability to sit in front of a computer for an extended period of time.
  • Occasionally required to move about the office/campus with the capability of transporting objects up to 20 lbs.

Work Schedule
Monday Friday 8:00 a.m. 4:30 p.m.

Salary Grade Number:
The salary grade for the position is 8.

Salary Range:
The salary rate for this position is $57500.

The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate departmental budget availability internal salary equity considerations and available market information but not based on a candidates sex or any other protected status.
