Why Your Role Matters
A Counsellor plays a key role within the Pro ViceChancellor Education & Student Experience portfolio Student Wellbeing pillar Health theme in the provision of confidential psychological services to students while they are enrolled at UNSW. The role makes a critical contribution to the broad Psychology & Wellness Team in the treatment and support of UNSW student mental health needs within its professional scope of practice.
This requires conducting shortterm evidencebased individual group and systemic psychological interventions and consultation with academic and general staff on student issues. This role works collaboratively with staff across the Psychology & Wellness theme the overarching goal to support students in achieving their full potential and contribute to an outstanding learning experience aligned with the portfolios Education & Student Experience strategy.
This a fixed term part time role until the end of April 2026 covering for an employee on leave. The role reports to the Head Psychology & Wellness and has no direct reports.
Main responsibilities Summary
Provide therapeutic interventions for individual clients and support academic progress and psychosocial adjustment to the demands of University Life
Provide Bulk Billed services under the Medicare Better Access initiative and OSHC
Participate in professional development peer review and supervision to enhance service quality
Offer timely advice on student issues and make appropriate referrals
Design and deliver educational materials and workshops for students and staff
Maintain clinical documentation and adhere to confidentiality and professional standards
Represent UNSW at various events and meetings

Who You Are
We are looking for someone who is aligned with UNSWs vision and values with exceptional interpersonal and time management skills and who comes with:
Relevant tertiary qualification with subsequent relevant experience or equivalent competence gained through a combination of education professional training and/or applied psychological experience in assessment and therapeutic intervention
Full and current AHPRA registration as a Psychologist/Clinical Psychologist or Social Worker with membership of AASW and Mental Health accreditation.
Ideally at least five years fulltime equivalent postregistration experience demonstrating advanced understanding of psychological theories principles and practice gained through substantial and relevant postgraduate work and supervision within a mental health clinical setting
Eligible for and willing to obtain a Medicare and relevant insurance provider number for billed services provided by Psychology & Wellness
Demonstrated professional practice in accordance with State legislation relevant professional standards and awareness of current professional issues.
Competence in assessment and psychotherapy for adults of different ages and cultural backgrounds
Understanding of the psychosocial issues and concerns experienced by students undertaking universitylevel studies
Ability to provide written and verbal consultation advice and support to key stakeholders including family members primary carers academic teaching staff and other internal/external support services balancing safety and confidentiality
Experience working with various computer systems and applications including Microsoft Office applications
Working hours are full time Monday to Friday business hours. Whilst there is some flexibility to work from home occasionally most of the work is expected to be done on campus. Candidates will need to have full working rights this role is not available for sponsorship. All candidates will also need a valid work with children check and police check.
