BASIC FUNCTION
The Perioperative Nurse Specialist will provide nursing management and nursing staff with expert advice research education tools and assistance to the surgical staff as well as coordinate activities of nursing personnel in the perioperative unit. The Perioperative Nurse Specialist will facilitate required work assistance and communication between the surgical staff surgical/procedural providers and patients.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
Organizes daily activities of staff and assists staff when needed. Participates in staff development through coaching and mentoring. Provides direct patient care including patient assessment and plan of care as needed. Provides preoperative and recovery room nursing services. May be called on to assist in intraoperative scenarios. Ensures that continuity of care is maintained in all perioperative areas. Assists manager with staff scheduling ensures appropriate staffing is provided. Monitors evaluates and modifies staffing patterns in order to properly utilize assigned staff to provide patient care in assigned area. Manages the daily handling of procedural scheduling monitors peroperative requirements and communicates with patients family and other departments to ensure that necessary preoperative requirements have been met. Communicates with various departments to coordinate services. Communicates with manager and staff regarding perioperative logistics for all cases. Provides input and assists with the evaluation and ordering of necessary supplies. Practices fairness and consideration for all employees and patients. Provides support and guidance to staff in high stress situations. Collaborates with the Surgical Services Manager with both daily and longterm department operations planning projects and goals. Assists other departments on occasions when available to do so.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Learning:
Required
Graduate from an accredited school of nursing. Associate degree required. Bachelors degree preferred.
Work Experience:
Required
24 years of clinical experience. Experience in an OR/PACU environment and circulating experience is preferred.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
Work is performed in both patient care and nonpatient care settings. Patient care will occur in the surgical department including the operating room suites PACU pre and postoperative areas procedure room and central service. There is exposure to body fluids. Personal protective equipment is required and provided. The pace of the pre/postoperative and surgical areas is dictated by case load.

Physical/Sensory/Cognitive Requirements:
Physical: Requires varying degree of pushing pulling and lifting up to 50 pounds. May assist with patient transfers up to 350 pounds. Note: assistance is required when lifting more than 50 pounds. Frequent standing walking bending reaching and stooping are required. Standing for long periods of time may be necessary.
Sensory: Good vision hearing and sense of smell are required.
Cognitive: Must be able to concentrate for long periods of time. Remain calm during emergencies.
Responsibilities in an Emergency:
The Perioperative Nurse Specialist is expected to respond to emergency situations involving the safety of patients other employees and the facility. This includes the ability to assist with a possible evacuation of patients.
