Job Description

Substitute Bus Attendant

Training Rate: $16.88 per Hour

Sub Attendant Rate:$17.14 per Hour

Qualified substitutes who have successfully completed training may bid on contracted routes. ContractedAttendant Rate starts at $20.75 per hour.


JOB DESCRIPTION

The Bus Attendants job is to assist the driver with special education students while they are being transported to and from school; and to provide assistance with students health care ingress and egress from buses.

To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge skill and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  1. Minimum age of 21
  2. Successful completion of training or certification programs related to position. (This could include but isnotlimited to one of the following: High School Diploma GED AA BA etc. if applicable.
  3. Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
  4. Must pass a basic skills test.
  5. Must be able to meet the Physical Demands of the position.
  6. Completion of Safe Schools Web Based Training within thirty 30 days of hire.
  7. Must be First Aid certified or be willing to obtain First Aid certification with thirty 30 days of employment.
  8. Must complete District provided CPI training at the next available opportunity after employment.
  9. Must pass a background check which includes employee paid fingerprinting.

REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION

  1. Employment history in similar position(s).

  2. References indicating satisfactory skills and abilities in similar position.

  3. Must uphold board policies and follow administrative procedures.
  4. Must take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students equipment materials and facilities.
  5. Must be able to pass a yearly bus evacuation drill and maintain the physical requirements of removing children safely from the bus. Must possess sufficient strength and ability to assist ill or physically impaired students to enter or exit a school bus through the passenger service door.
  6. Must attend yearly inservice trainings as required as well as attend any training as directed by management.
  7. Evidence of ability to assess and correct issues involving safety.
  8. Evidence of ability to establish and maintain a tactful cooperative and effective relationship with students parents staff fellow employees and management.
  9. Evidence of ability to approach assigned work in a professional manner working toward the common goal of teamwork pride in service delivery and continuous improvement
  10. Must demonstrate sufficient command of the English language to communicate verbally and in writing with students parents district staff members and other concerned people regarding all aspects of their job related activities.
  11. Must be able to use basic computer programs to assist in the development of route sheets enter timecard information and read and respond to email.

QUALIFICATIONS PREFERRED

  1. Previous experience working with students with disabilities preferred.
  2. Evidence of ability to manage large groups of students.
  3. Evidence of excellent attendance punctuality and dependability; evidence of ability to be selfdisciplined and a selfstarter.
  4. Positive job evaluations and recommendations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

The Bus Attendant will:

  1. Assist special education students to provide care and other special needs during transport and safe ingress and egress from buses; including both emergency situations and normal transport.
  2. Assist drivers in cleaning interior of assigned vehicles to maintain appearance sanitation and safety of vehicle.
  3. Assist students with the buckling of safety restraints and keep students seated.
  4. Instruct special education students for the purpose of enforcing rules and regulations and maintaining safety.
  5. Work with driver to load unload and secure wheelchairs for transport.
  6. Prepare documentation to provide written support and/or convey information.
  7. Respect the confidentiality of student information

  3. Demonstrate skills needed to operate standard equipment to provide for special needs of students communicate effectively with students and caregivers.
  4. Demonstrate understanding of vehicle operation and special care requirements.
  5. Demonstrate knowledge of the limitations of students with special needs.
  6. Demonstrate the ability to understand and address students with special needs understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  7. Perform all duties of the position within the scope of Kennewick School District policies and procedures including regular attendance and punctuality.
  8. Perform other jobrelated duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here represent those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

  • Mobility: While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to stand walk move easily up and down stairs without assistance push or pull heavy objects sit kneel and crouch twist and bend use hands to type finger handle or feel; and reach with hands and arm.
  • Sense: The employee is required to talk/hear conversations and other sounds. The employee must be able to communicate effectively in person over the telephone and by using the radio communications system. The employee is occasionally required to taste or smell. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision far vision color vision peripheral vision depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Lifting: The employee must be able to lift or move up to 5075 pounds or more dependent on student weight. The employee may be required to physically move quickly while performing student supervision duties.

  • Physical Hazards: While performing the duties of this job the employeefrequently works near moving mechanical parts is working in a moving vehicle and can encounter all types of weather and walking hazards. The employee may be exposed to weather extremes including wet and/or humid conditions extreme heat or cold of ice conditions. The noise level in this work environment is moderate.
