SUPERVISOR: Building Principal and Special Education Administrator PAYMENT RATE: According to Educational Support Staff Salary Schedule QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- One of the following endorsements:
- Completed two years of study at an institution of higher education 48 college hours) or have a minimum of an associate degree.
- Demonstrate knowledge through formal assessment (e.g. ParaPro Assessment (former assessment) or The Paraeducator Learning Network Assessment (current assessment) within one year from date of hire.
- Maintain current TB testing as required by Health Department regulations (after employment offer is made).
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Engages students in classroom activities assignments and/or materials under the direction of the supervising teacher for the purpose of supporting and reinforcing learning objectives.
- Administers tests homework makeup work etc. for the purpose of supporting teachers in the classroom.
- Assists students in both the special education classroom and in the general education setting.
- Assists the teacher with scoring tests keeping records and making reports as required by the teacher.
- Assists the teacher with the physical set up of the classroom.
- Assists with the integration of technology into the classroom.
- Assists students in using low vision equipment.
- Assists students with adaptive magnifying equipment.
- Frequently assists students with basic needs including but not limited to selfcare hygiene feeding (may include tube feeding) toileting diapering dressing and physical transfers.
- Document and/or report any health concerns whether ongoing (i.e. diabetes seizures) or emergent (i.e. lacerations bruises).
- Attends meetings and inservice presentations (e.g. first aid CPR emergency procedures etc. for the purpose of acquiring and/or conveying information relative to job functions.
- Communicates with supervising instructional staff professional support personnel and parents for the purpose of assisting in evaluating progress and/or implementing IEP objectives.
- Implements under the supervision of the assigned teacher behavioral plans designed by the IEP team.
- Understands and implements Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports
- Assists in collecting data and maintaining records in regard to student performance.
- Assists in collecting data and maintaining records in accordance with Emergency Safety Intervention requirements
- Assists in managing classroom routines and procedures.
- Assists in deescalation of student behavior and teaching replacement behaviors.
- Adheres to all procedures and techniques as outlined in the districts deescalation training and maintaining up to date certification.
- Wears protective clothing and utilizes appropriate protective equipment as requested by the supervising teacher and/or administrator.
- Documents all instances of injury in accordance with the districts workman comp procedures.
- Engages students in communication systems as instructed by the students SLP and IEP.
- Maintains instructional materials and/or manual and electronic files/records for the purpose of facilitating instruction; recording student information; and/or meeting mandated requirements.
- Supports students during assigned periods within a variety of school environments (e.g. restrooms specials playgrounds hallways bus loading zones cafeteria parking lots etc. for the purpose of maintaining a safe and positive learning environment.
- Provides under the supervision of the assigned teacher instruction to students in a variety of individual and group activities (e.g. academic subjects social skills daily living skills etc. for the purpose of reinforcing instructional objectives; implementing IEP plans; and ensuring students success in school.
- Assists students with individual assignments and IEP goals.
- Provides a structured environment for students by following the schedule of activities that promotes the students learning opportunities and their independent living skills.
- Demonstrates dependability promptness and regular attendance in order to establish consistent routines promote teamwork and guarantee instructional continuity.
- Maintains a high level of confidentiality regarding student and staff information in order to remain in compliance with legal requirements and to maintain a professional working environment.
- Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
- Paraeducators at the high school level may be required to assist and instruct students on job sites.
- Paraeducators at the high school level may be required to drive student interns to job sites.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
- Demonstrates required mobility agility and dexterity to work with students.
- Ability to move lift pull or push objects.
- Remains attentive to students while working in noisy crowded environments with numerous interruptions.
