OVERVIEW OF SUMNER G. WHITTIER SCHOOL
The Whittier School is a K8 Elementary school that offers a joyful approach to learning in a diverse respectful and inclusive environment for approximately 650 students in early childhood through eighthgrade. We have two sections of each grade level K 8 with class sizes that average from 1826 per class 54 English Learners and 12 Special Education students.
The Whittier School specializes in education that inspires students by nurturing each individuals voice intellect and character. With rich content and an emphasis on inquirybased and studentdriven projects students are empowered and
encouraged to be active and engaged learners. Our students innate sense of wonder is the

POSITION OVERVIEW
The Whittier School seeks an inspiring music teacher who is responsible for teaching music
education to students in grades K8th Grade and assists the staff of the school in the
improvement and appreciation of music instruction. Helps students grow in their enjoyment
appreciation and performance of music through a variety of planned music experiences which
include singing moving to music playing of instruments and listening and performs other duties
directly related to this job description.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Teaches general music to K8th grade including harmony appreciation history and ensemble. Utilizes repertoire of
all types of music literature including traditional and contemporary that are appropriate for the ages and skill levels of students. Provides opportunities for music ensembles including rock band choir & amp; musicals. Plans rehearses and directs students in three musical programs for school and community (Veterans Day HOLIDAY Vocal Night Memorial Day Concerts). Differentiate music curriculum to meet the needs of the individual student and the student body. Plans a balanced music program and organizes daily class time so that preparation rehearsal and instruction can be accomplished within the allotted time. Develops and refines music curriculum based on MENC standards of creating performing and responding. Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior to provide an orderly productive environment during practice group rehearsals and music performances. Evaluates each students musical growth and contribution to the performance of the group that allows everyone to clearly with parents and school faculty/staff on the progress of individual students. Maintains care/responsibility for schoolowned music musical instruments and equipment to prevent loss or abuse. Cooperation with Principal and staff inproviding musical programs for school assemblies open house parent meetings and seasonal programs.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
Minimum BA or MA in Music or Music Education
Massachusetts Teaching Certification Music Education K12
Ability to work with musicians at all skill levels
Strong instrumental skills including piano accompaniment
Orff Kodaly or Dalcroze training strongly encouraged
