The histology travel technician provides a variety of laboratory and histology procedures for the Anatomic Pathology Department. Successfully achieves and maintains competencies in all histology laboratory related skills.
The intent of this job description is to provide a summary of the major duties and responsibilities of this position and shall not be considered as a detailed description of all the work requirements that may be inherent in the position.
Demonstrates compliance in laboratory safety policies procedures and standards. Maintains confidentiality of all materials handled. Demonstrates knowledge and operation of LIS software computer programs and equipment. Performs routine preventative maintenance and troubleshoots malfunctions on equipment and instrumentation. Completes records and monitors quality control and quality assurance documentation. Reviews and understands standard operating procedures and completes continued education activities. Assists with inventory control. Demonstrates knowledge and proficiency in the following complex histology duties: tissue processing embedding microtomy coverslipping microscopy tissue identification solution preparation automated & manual staining techniques when assigned and general immunohistochemistry when assigned. Meets or exceeds departmental productivity standards in embedding and microtomy areas. Trains others to perform histology responsibilities when assigned.
PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:
Sitting up to 6 hours/day in 3hour increments
Standing up to 3 hours/day in 1hour increments
Walking up to 2 hours/day in 10minute increments.
Rarely carries objects up to 25 pounds.
Hearing as it relates to normal conversation.
Seeing as it relates to general far/near/color and peripheral vision and depth perception.
POTENTIAL ONTHEJOB RISKS:
Potential risk of biological mechanical and chemical hazards.
SPECIFIC PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT AVAILABLE:
Gloves protective face masks/shields and lab coats.
COMMUNICATIONS:
Communicates with all levels of hospital personnel clients management physicians and outside vendors and visitors. Speaks reads and writes English.
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION: High school diploma or equivalent ASCP certified or eligible AS required
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: 2 years of previous experience in anatomic pathology or laboratory sciences.
