Invitation to Compete: #1125: Delivery Driver 2 (Bookmobile)

Central Library Materials Distribution Services

RegularFLSA nonexempt fulltime 80 hours per pay period)

Salary range: $29.63 $35.88 per hour


A pay period is two weeks in length that starts on Wednesday and ends on Tuesday. The anticipated schedule for this position is Monday through Friday with occasional evenings and weekends. The anticipated shift times for this position are 7:00am 3:30pm and 5:00am 1:30pm. This schedule is subject to change based on the Librarys current operational need. This position is a member of the bargaining unit represented by AFSCME.

This position is open to the public and employees of The Seattle Public Library and will remain open until filled. OVERVIEW

This position is part of the Materials Distribution Services team which includes Drivers and Automated Material Handling System Operators who report to a Materials Distribution Services Manager. This position primarily supports the Mobile Services unit which provides access to library materials and services for patrons who face barriers such as age disability or illness. Bookmobiles visit eligible childcare centers retirement homes nursing homes and other facilities where residents may have difficulty accessing a library. At some locations users board the trucks to browse and select materials while at others staff transport library materials into buildings and homes using book carts and boxes for selection by users.

A core responsibility of this position is the safely drive navigate and park library vehicles in a variety of locations throughout the city. The Driver II also sorts packs loads and unloads library materials and equipment from vehicles.

This position uses computers to check materials in and out at outreach sites and performs a variety of support and customer service functions as needed. Depending on the type of stop responsibilities may include setting up book displays transporting book carts between rooms assisting users in selecting materials and making unaccompanied home service deliveries. Office duties include sorting and reshelving returned materials and performing clerical support activities as assigned. Additional responsibilities may include assisting with route development maintaining schedules coordinating vehicle repairs participating in special outreach events and recommending safety procedures.

This position may also be scheduled for regular Driver I duties such as delivering library materials throughout Seattle transporting boxes and totes using hand carts and handling various library materials including books laptops data projectors and book group kits.

Job Responsibilities

  • Operate up to a Class 6 (GVWR 26000 vehicle as well as other Library vehicles safely and efficiently to and from locations throughout the City of Seattle adhering to delivery routes and schedules in a timely manner. Maintain an accurate and complete log of all delivery activities.
  • Safely transport Library materials and staff to community stops schools residences and other outreach locations.
  • Provide excellent customer service to library patrons with a wide range of needs backgrounds identities and interests. This includes preschoolers older adults and individuals with disabilities.
  • Provide backup support as a Driver I for deliveries to and from the Central Library and twentysix 26 neighborhood branches when needed.
  • Perform pre and posttrip vehicle inspections including checking oil tire pressure washing vehicles and overall cleanliness putting chains on tires in snow conditions; report maintenance and repair needs.
  • Provide circulation support at outreach sites by checking materials in and out handling fines and fees placing reserves offering basic reader advisory services registering patrons for library cards and shelving materials.
  • Sort pack load and unload books and other items from delivery trucks.

Qualifications

  • Education: High School Diploma or GED
  • Driving and Delivery Experience: Minimum of 2 years of experience safely operating trucks up to a Class 6 (GVWR 26000 in residential and urban traffic. Must demonstrate the ability to navigate tight spaces follow delivery routes maintain schedules and efficiently load/unload materials. Familiarity with Seattles geography is preferred.
  • Customer Service Experience: Minimum of 1 year providing customer service to the general public demonstrating proactive friendly and responsive interactions.
  • Communication Skills: Candidates must be able to effectively respond to patron and coworker communications in person in writing and via telephone specifically the ability to listen to and understand customer concerns assess available options resolve conflicts with tact and diplomacy and respond accurately and appropriately. Candidates must be able to effectively communicate in English verbally and in writing as well as comprehend spoken and written English. Candidates must have experience and skills working with diverse populations.
  • Technology Proficiency: Experience using menubased computer applications in a Microsoft Windows environment to access and manage library borrower records. Must be familiar with office equipment including copiers printers scanners and email programs like Microsoft Outlook. Basic math skills required.
  • Organizational Skills: Ability to alphabetically and numerically sort books and materials accurately and efficiently while following library filing systems such as Dewey Decimal.
  • Independence and Teamwork: Must be able to organize tasks prioritize workloads follow instructions and work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Physical Requirements: Must be able to bend stretch stoop and lift book bins weighing up to 50 lbs. push/pull hand trucks up to 200 lbs. and move book carts up to 350 lbs.
  • Language Skills: Fluency in Spanish Vietnamese Cantonese Mandarin or Russian is desirable.
  • Licensing Requirement: Must possess a valid Washington State Drivers License and provide a Washington State Drivers Abstract demonstrating a clean driving record.
