The Assistant Attorney I/II performs a broad range of legal work including providing legal advice and litigating criminal and civil matters. The primary focus of this position encompassing 95 of its duties relates to criminal prosecution and providing legal guidance to the Juneau Police Department.

Crucial skills for success in this position include selfmotivation to learn CBJ law (i.e. CBJC Title 42 72 and Chapter 1.40 Alaska law (i.e. A.S. Title 11 12 and 47 and the Alaska Court Rules as the incumbent will upon a week of foundational observation and learning be immersed in case work which includes arraignments case screening Rule 11 negotiations and trials. As a fastpaced nearly paperless office the ideal incumbent must be computer savvy and quickly able to research relevant law and understand the relevant facts. Additionally a qualified candidate will have the ability to formulate wellreasoned arguments be comfortable making quick decisions and prosecute misdemeanor cases and noncomplex civil cases independently with minimal supervision.
ABOUT THE LAW DEPARTMENT
The mission of the Law Department is to empower policymakers by drafting explaining and enforcing the law. We are a collegial team that adapts to the needs of our clients and coworkers. We have a criminal prosecution section with two prosecutors and two paralegals who prosecute around 1100 cases per year and a civil section with three attorneys and one paralegal who provide a range of legal services including legal advice to clients drafting legislation litigating civil suits and defending client decisions. Support staff are supervised by the office manager who assists with legislation and manages the departments budget and other daily operations. The municipal attorney who is appointed by the CBJ Assembly supervises the attorneys and provides overall policy direction to the office.
WORKING HOURS AND LOCATION
This position generally works Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. 4:30 p.m. The position alternates being oncall every other week and attending court on every other weekend. The department values worklife balance so schedule flexibility exists to accommodate weekend court and the completion of time sensitive legal matters. The Law Department offices are located in downtown Juneau in the Sealaska Plaza Building directly across from City Hall.
POSITION LEVELS
This position is flexibly staffed. The level of the job offer will be based on the selected candidates qualifications. If hired at the lower level the successful applicant will be promoted to the higher level upon meeting the minimum qualifications for the higher level completing the training plan and demonstrating competency in the work as determined by the supervisor.
Desired Qualifications
Positions in this class are partially exempt but the following desirable qualifications are recommended:
Assistant Attorney I Range 322 $113588.80 $121284.80 Annually (DOE)
Experience:
Experience as a legal intern or clerk is preferred.
Assistant Attorney II Range 324 $129459.20 $138174.40 Annually (DOE)
Experience:
Four 4 years of professional level legal experience as an attorney.
Education: Juris Doctorate required.
Other: Must be licensed to practice law in the State of Alaska and be a member in good standing of the Alaska Bar.
