Job Description

  • Employment Type: Continuing FullTime 35hour week)
  • Remuneration Level 8: $123044 $Superannuation
  • Location: Kensington NSW (the successful candidate will be required to work on campus 3 days a week)


Why The Role Matters:

The Editor is responsible for curating developing and overseeing the publication of highquality student journalism in the School of the Arts and Medias inhouse online publication (Newsworthy). This role involves mentoring student contributors ensuring professional editorial standards and expanding the platforms reach through innovative digital strategies. The Editor plays a critical role in maintaining Newsworthys reputation as a studentdriven yet publicly engaging journalistic platform.

Accountabilities:

  • Evaluate edit and make final decisions on all content ensuring high journalistic standards and legal/ethical compliance consulting with legal experts as needed.
  • Collaborate with students tutors and convenors to identify and develop publishable coursework and independent story pitches.
  • Provide detailed feedback and guidance to help students improve their work to professional standards.
  • Lead initiatives to enhance Newsworthys magazinestyle approach while integrating a news section for explainers and timesensitive stories.
  • Develop and implement strategies to increase social media engagement across platforms including but not limited to Instagram TikTok and microblogging sites.
  • Oversee the expansion of storytelling formats including immersive journalism.
  • Identify opportunities to incorporate multimedia elements such as video content on the homepage.
  • Encourage student participation in editorial decisions and foster motivation through recognition initiatives.
  • Lead discussions on redesigns structural updates and potential new sections like independent arts and entertainment reviews.
  • Liaise with School staff members to integrate Newsworthys objectives within journalism courses.

Skills and Experience:

To be considered you will hold Australian Working Rights or Australian Citizenship. Visa sponsorship is not available for this appointment.

  • A relevant tertiary qualification with subsequent relevant experience or an equivalent level of knowledge gained through any combination of education training and experience.
  • Proven experience in journalism editorial management or digital publishing with strong editorial judgment.
  • Ability to mentor emerging writers with experience in academic or student journalism mentoring preferred.
  • Experience managing digital media platforms and implementing effective social media engagement strategies.
  • Strong communication collaboration and organisational skills.
  • Familiarity with media law and ethical considerations in journalism.
  • Proven ongoing engagement with journalism industry trends and digital publishing innovations.

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of contemporary digital storytelling tools and platforms.
  • Understanding of pedagogical approaches in journalism education.
  • Experience in universityled workshops on pedagogy student mentoring and digital engagement.
