Summary:

The research teaching assistant (TA) for the Heely Scholars will be responsible for the support of all research and creative writing activities for the eight scholars present during the two week session.

A Residential Advisor must be a recent high school graduate or a recent graduate of The Lawrenceville School. Residential Advisors responsibilities are to assist with the residential life of students in one of the Academic Scholars programs. The residential advisors work together with the Head of House and their respective program director to provide support guidance and supervision to the students participating in the program. The Residential Advisor position requires responsible leadership skills and maturity in working with students only a little younger than themselves.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • The TA is responsible for maintaining an instructive and collaborative atmosphere in the library and classroom at all times.
  • The TA will assist teachers or directors with the implementation of the curriculum
  • TA has primary responsibility for library housekeeping and should ensure that students keep their areas clean and neat before leaving the library.
  • Support students inhouse each day/evening during the week/weekends they are in charge of during the 2 weeks.
  • The TA will meet with the Program Director daily or as needed to discuss progress of scholars.
  • Communicate with Program Directors as needed.
  • Help supervise students during the two week session on any trips off campus
  • The TA will call public safety and/or 911 should there be any accidents. Then TA will call the Program Directors.
  • Assist the program director and Head of House with both the movein and moveout days including attendance at the opening House meeting.
  • Oversee study hall from 8:00 pm to 10:00pm each night of the program.
  • Help enforce an 11pm lightsout every other night.
  • Assist the Head of House in enforcing all House rules and communicate with the HoH and program director if violations occur.
  • Be present for all meals and travel with students to any offcampus activities as required by the program director.
  • Serve as a resource for students participating in the program.

Requirements

Qualifications: To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge skill and/or ability as well as educational background required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

  • The TA/RA will have experience in archival research and crafting expository essays of at least 20 pages.
  • The TA/RA is required to be familiar with research procedures and facilities such as JSTOR and historiography.
  • The TA/RA is required to be familiar with all research procedures and program expectations.
  • Tolerance for ambiguity and flexibility
  • Strong interpersonal organizational and problemsolving skills

Education and/or Experience:

  • Completed High School Diploma (by program date)
  • Previous experience supervising children and young adults preferably in a school or camp environment. Examples include but are not limited to: peer tutoring serving as the captain of a sports team camp counselor (at School Camp or elsewhere) prefect (especially in a Lower House at Lawrenceville) babysitting etc.
  • Prior residential supervision experience of children and/or young adults preferred
  • A desire to serve students and participate fully in a residential academic community
  • Strong time management skills and ability to complete tasks and meet deadlines
  • Outstanding communication skills including the ability to use clear concise and grammatically correct written and oral language in all professional interactions with students their families peers the leadership team and the larger community
  • Tolerance for ambiguity and flexibility
  • Strong interpersonal organizational and problemsolving skills
  • Ability to remain calm in emergency situations
  • CPR and first aid certification preferred
