Job Description

The New York City Department of Correction (DOC) is an integral part of the Citys evolving criminal justice system participating in reform initiatives and strategies aimed to move the City towards a smaller jail system without compromising public safety. The DOC is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for our employees visitors volunteers and people in our custody. Importantly safe jails enable DOC to provide people in custody with the tools and opportunities they need to successfully reenter their communities. The DOC operates facilities and court commands across the five boroughs with more than 7500 diverse professionals and knowledgeable experts.

The candidate recruited will serve as the Deputy Director of OSHA compliance. The selected candidate will report to the Assistant Commissioner for Environmental Health and will be responsible for the following:
Developing implementing and updating Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) compliance programs
including but not limited to personal protective equipment respiratory protection program confined space program;
Developing inspection protocols and performing inspections to ensure compliance with OSHA programs;
Developing and conducting OSHA mandated training programs; responding to methane alarms;
Responding to staff/inmate/visitor complaints;
Performing complaint inspections and performing any necessary environmental testing;
Scheduling and performing methane monitoring and confined space entries with maintenance personnel;
Scheduling and conducting OSHA program compliance inspections in Departmental facilities;
Accompanying the NYS Department of Labor Public Employee Safety and Health Bureau (PESH) inspector
Providing necessary documentation to PESH responding to PESH reports and assisting the facilities in correcting any noted
deficiencies;
Scheduling any required OSHA training for the Environment Health Unit personnel and facility personnel.
Performing any other tasks assigned by the Assistant Commissioner for Environmental Health.

Qualifications :

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college including or supplemented by 30 semester credits in the physical and/or biological sciences i.e. biology botany chemistry geology physics physiology and zoology; of which not more than 12 credit hours may be in the applied sciences i.e. environmental technology sanitation technology medical technology public health infection control or food service; and at least two years of satisfactory fulltime experience performing inspections to assure compliance with pertinent laws rules and regulations governing the areas of food and general environmental conditions; or

2. An associate degree from an accredited college with 15 semester credits in the physical and/or biological sciences of which not more than 6 credit hours may be in the applied sciences and 4 years of satisfactory fulltime experience as described in 1 above; or

3. Education and/or experience equivalent to 1 or 2 above. However all candidates must have at least 60 semester credits from an accredited college including at least 15 semester credits in the physical and and/or biological sciences. Furthermore to assure compliance with Section 11.112 of the Compilation of the Rules and Regulations of the State of New York (NYCRR) Title 10 (Health) all candidates must have at least 2 years of experience as a public health sanitarian as described in 1 above.

4.
