Patrol Officer Department of Public Safety

Reports to: Patrol Sergeant

JOB SUMMARY:

Patrol Officers play a crucial role in ensuring the safety of students faculty staff and visitors within Washington College campus. You are responsible for enforcing campus regulations State and Federal Laws responding to emergencies conducting investigations and providing a visible presence to deter criminal activity.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Patrol and Monitoring:
    • Conduct regular patrols of assigned areas on foot bicycle or patrol vehicle to monitor for any suspicious activities or safety hazards.
    • Maintain a visible presence on campus to deter criminal activities and ensure the safety of individuals.
  2. Emergency Response:
    • Respond promptly to emergency calls accidents and incidents occurring on campus.
    • Take immediate action to secure the scene provide assistance to those in need and coordinate with appropriate emergency services.
  3. Law Enforcement and Investigation:
    • Enforce campus policies rules and regulations as well as local state and federal laws.
    • Conduct investigations into incidents such as thefts s vandalism and other criminal activities occurring on campus.
    • Gather evidence interview witnesses and prepare detailed reports for followup actions.
    • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Campus Police Officer Certification (Special Police Commission) issued by the governor of The State of Maryland within one year of employment.
  4. Traffic Control and Parking Enforcement:
    • Ensure the safe flow of traffic on campus roads and parking areas.
    • Enforce parking regulations issue citations when necessary and assist with traffic accidents or vehiclerelated incidents.
  5. Crowd Control and Event Security:
    • Provide security and crowd control at campus events athletic games concerts and other large gatherings.
    • Collaborate with event organizers and campus staff to ensure a safe and orderly environment.
  6. Community Engagement:
    • Build positive relationships with students faculty staff and campus visitors through outreach programs and community policing initiatives.
    • Offer educational programs on crime prevention personal safety and campus safety awareness.
    • Attend campus events and be community policing oriented.
  7. Other Duties:

    1. Collaborate with allied law enforcement agencies with regard to investigations relating to college matters.

    1. Give testimony and introduce evidence in judicial proceedings.

    1. Maintain confidentiality of all information relating to investigations.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Perform other related duties consistent with the position as required.

MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES:

Structurally the incumbent does not supervise subordinate personnel. However may be employed on specific operations that would require supervisory control.

ORGANIZATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Accountable to the assigned Patrol Corporal Patrol Sergeant and ultimately the Lieutenant Deputy Chief and Chief for all phases of activities.

  1. Routinely and as required have internal and external contacts with students faculty staff and visitors to resolve individual and group issues.

EDUCATION:

  1. Completion of a level of education equivalent to a high school diploma.

  1. Completion of courses in law enforcement/ public safety training at community colleges or similar institutions preferred.

  1. Ability to become a Commissioned Special Police Officer (Campus Police Officer) appointed by the Governor of the State of Maryland after appropriate training.

EXPERIENCE AND BACKGROUND:

  1. Previous experience in college public safety/ police work or similar exposure to the public is a plus. Previous police or military police experience is desired.

  1. Possession of a firstaid certificate or readiness to undergo firstaid training on the job.

  1. Possession of a valid motor vehicle operators license.

  1. Proven ability to work in potential crisis situations.

  1. Knowledge in the use of computers is desirable.

WORKING CONDITIONS/HAZARDS:

1. Assignments can include foot bicycle and vehicle patrols. Patrols are carried out under all types of weather conditions.

2. Occasionally responds to substantially dangerous situations while addressing emergencies.

3. The nature of certain assigned duties includes an inherent risk of personal injury.

WORK SCHEDULE/HOURS:

Shifts normally are 10 hour rotating with 4 days on and 3 days off. Assignments will include Holidays weekdays and weekends. Patrols are scheduled 24 hours daily. May be called upon at any time. Schedule is set to change at any time or when shift coverage is needed. FullTime/35hours week/ NonExempt Employee
