Description of Position
The Summer Clerk will work in a fulltime position for 10 weeks with attorneys and professional staff of the Division to provide legal and other research support for members of the General Assembly. The General Assembly will be in legislative session during this time. Summer Clerks will work with Division attorneys on legal and policy research requests for legislators and on preparing drafting requests. Summer Clerks will also accompany Division attorneys in attending committee meetings and sessions of the General Assembly to develop a deeper understanding of the legislative process.
Legislative Drafting Division
The North Carolina General Assembly Legislative Drafting Division is a nonpartisan staff division of the Legislative Services Office. Attorneys with the Legislative Drafting Division provide legislative drafting services as well as legal and policy analysis for all 170 members of the North Carolina General Assembly serve as staff to the appropriations and interim study committees and work with the Fiscal Research Division to draft the biennial budget. Employees are generally assigned to multiple subject areas and specialize in several subject areas.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
- A Summer Clerk must be at the time of employment a rising third year law student in good standing.

- Most recent available law school transcript (may be unofficial copy).
- A copy of the final writing assignment for the Spring 1L writing course. Please include a cover sheet that indicates the extent to which the writing assignment has been edited by others.
