Primary Purpose:
Assist the Director of Transportation in overall administration of the transportation department. Provide supervision and leadership to the transportation workforce as necessary to ensure safe efficient use of equipment facilities and personnel. Maintains exemplary professional communication with campus administrators colleagues and members of the community.
Education / Certification:
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Preferably some college education or relevant training/courses.
- Class B CDL license with P & S endorsements.
- Must initiate certification by the Texas Association of Pupil Transportation (TAPT) as a Pupil Transportation Official within 180 days of hire if not already certified.
- Certified Drug/Alcohol Awareness Program Supervisor or willing to obtain within 180 days of hire.
Special Knowledge / Skills:
- Comprehensive understanding of pupil transportation policies including federal state and local.
- Strong organization skills and large group presentation skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and well developed written and verbal communication skills.
- Knowledge in adult training techniques and possess mechanical aptitude with strong leadership skills.
- Ability to use computer software and vendor platforms effectively.
- Computational aptitude detail orientation mapping and routing skills.
Experience / Other Requirements:
- Five years in student transportation is preferred.
- Personal cell phone is required to handle district related business frequently including afterhours or when away from the office on district business.
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Transportation Operations
- Assists Director of Transportation in department operations to include management of department training required reporting student discipline management plan and community relations.
- Ensure all routes across the district are assigned qualified employees on a daily basis.
- Participate in the inclement weather decision making process.
Department Climate
- Promote a positive student safety focused environment.
- Deal sensitively and fairly with people of diverse cultural backgrounds and abilities.
- Communicate effectively with students staff parents and community.
Department Improvement
- Participate in development of department improvement plans with staff parents and community members.
- Participate / implement safety and security initiatives.
- Assist Director with developing maintaining and storage of district records pursuant to federal state and district policies regarding record retention.
- Continuous professional development as related to pupil transportation operations.
Personnel Management
- Supervise transportation department operations in Directors absence.
- Oversees time management for department staff minimizing overtime for the employees.
- Evaluates the performance of all directreport personnel on a regular basis pursuant to Comal ISD policy. Reviews findings with the Director of Transportation and employee individually.
- Assist the Director with interviewing applicants for hire to include selection and onboarding of candidates.
- Supervisory leadership by personal example pursuant to Comal ISD policies and/or processes; converse breach of policy and/or procedures with the Director of Transportation.
Administration and Fiscal/Facilities Management
- Develop and present material for various meetings to include transportation staff district committee and Board of Trustee meetings.
- Ensures effective utilization of vehicles with Coordinator of Fleet Services.
- Optimizes vehicle routing and record supporting data/documentation.
- Ensures key pupil transportation data is collected.
- Monitors ontime performance.
- Responds and investigates vehicle incidents as necessary.
- Documents / manages campus administrator parent and employee complaints.
- Prepares and submits required reports in a timely manner.
- Prepares state route descriptions and state reports.
- Periodically drive bus route (or ride along) to determine status and condition of route; serve as a substitute bus driver or bus monitor as needed.
- Other duties as assigned.

District furnished laptop and other required office equipment.

- Conditions may include performance in inclement weather heat and humidity (some buses are not air conditioned) enduring a bumpy ride and exposure to possible injury due to traffic accidents.
- Continual walking (to inside and around bus) sitting standing squatting stretching bending kneeling stooping twisting turning ascending bus steps pushing pulling carrying reaching repetitive hand and arm motions (steering driving shifting) lifting 50 lbs. or more) talking (announcing streets talking on radio) seeing (traffic lights inspections passengers stopped vehicles traffic conditions) hearing (traffic sounds emergency vehicles passengers radio mechanical problems).
- Must be physically able to climb in and out of the school bus emergency doors to evacuate the bus in an emergency.
- Considerable exposure to dust traffic fumes and high noise level from both outside traffic as well as from passengers.
- Maintain emotional stability under enhanced stress; occasionally work with students with disabilities and/or screaming children and potentially deal with life threatening emergencies.
- Due to the nature of the position being available after hours weekends and holidays is required. On call situations are to be expected.
