Job Description


Position Title: Building Maintenance Technician
Department: Health Department
Division: Administration
Salary: $34886/yearly $16.77211/hourly
Closing Date: Until filled

Job Summary/Scope
Performs general/light maintenance of all areas associated with Patee Market Health Center and St. Joseph Animal Services and responds to directions from direct supervisor or designee. This position is split between Animal Services (AM) and Patee Market Health Center (PM) with approximately four hours spent maintaining each location daily.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • PERFORMS all custodial & general maintenance activities (e.g. sweeping mopping buffing dusting cleaning restrooms trash disposal changing light bulbs etc. in the upkeep of Patee Market Health Centers interior areas occupied by health department and/or their staff and exterior areas unless specifically maintained by another independently identified agency; minimal work such as changing light bulbs or physical building repairs required in internal areas occupied by the Stuber Health Center or other agencies.
  • PERFORMS all custodial & general maintenance activities (e.g. sweeping mopping buffing dusting cleaning restrooms trash disposal changing light bulbs etc. in the upkeep of the St. Joseph Animal Services shelters interior areas occupied by health department and/or their staff and exterior areas unless specifically maintained by another independently identified agency.
  • PERFORMS minor plumbing and electrical repairs.
  • MOVES furniture and equipment; and PERFORMS setup or teardown tasks including loading and unloading supplies in support of health department activities.
  • CLEANS and SERVICES heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment boiler and other mechanical equipment in use at facility such as a surveillance system.
  • WASHES CLEANS and PAINTS all public use areas as instructed; STRIPS and PAINTS walls hallways stairwells doors windowsills and parking area as needed.
  • REGULAR and RELIABLE attendance required.

Other Duties and Responsibilities
  • REPORTS need for major building repairs to direct supervisor and ASSISTS in identifying sources for materials including making vendor contacts.
  • MAINTAINS proper supplies and equipment to perform required duties including ordering or directly purchasing items to maintain inventory.
  • REMOVES snow from and spreads ice remover on sidewalks surrounding the facility maintains grounds immediately around the facility including mowing and maintenance of green landscaped areas watering of plant life cleaning/removal of parking lot debris or maintaining parking space paint striping.
  • ASSEMBLES and/or REPAIRS furniture or other equipment as needed.
  • MAINTAINS general use/unassigned Health Department vehicles including miscellaneous minor repairs washes and waxes tire upkeep interior cleanliness including steam cleaning with portable cleaner and scheduling oil changes maintenance services or major repairs as necessary.
  • COLLECTS and transports recyclables to Citys recycling facility.
  • PERFORMS all other related duties as assigned.

Required (Essential) Knowledge Skills and Abilities
Skills in general facility maintenance inventory and supply
Ability to troubleshoot building maintenance problems and resolve.
Ability to perform tasks with minimum supervision.
Knowledge of electrical and plumbing repairs.
Knowledge of and familiarity with a snow blower floor buffer generator surveillance equipment and other maintenance equipment helpful or ability to learn within a reasonable time after employment.
Knowledge of the basic equipment found in the office environment and exterior of building including motorized equipment and power tools.
Ability to monitor HVAC system and boiler and follow directions.
Ability to respond to communications after working hours if needed.
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
Three years related work experience required.
A valid Drivers License required.

Material and Equipment Directly Used
Use a variety of equipment for light custodial duties such as vacuum cleaner sweepers duster broom and mop. Operates various machinery equipment hand and power tools shovels clippers buffers power washer etc. on a frequent basis to repair and maintain a variety of electrical plumbing refrigeration and other general components of the facility. There may be times when use of personal vehicle may be required.

Working Environment/Physical Requirements
Work is performed in a variety of indoor and outdoor settings where weather conditions can vary from extreme heat and cold with high levels of dust dirt fumes and noise. Physical activity includes prolonged standing bending stooping lifting walking and using arms and hands frequently. Must have the ability to lift objects weighing 75100 pounds independently and assist in lifting objects weighing in excess of 100 pounds. Must have the ability to carry and maneuver a 14 ladder and to climb a ladder to reach heights of 17 or more to perform basic maintenance tasks safely. Some overnight or day travel may be required for business purposes. Vacation and other leave scheduling shall be requested of and approved by the appropriate supervisor.

Education
High school diploma or equivalent required.
Passing of a drug screening required prior to appointment.
