Job Description

Johns Hopkins University has developed an ambitious vision to continue to integrate life design experiential learning and mentoring in the academic and cocurricular learning experience for all students and postdoctoral fellows. As part of this vision the School of Education at Johns Hopkins University is seeking a Career & Life Design Counselor to oversee and perform all essential career services functions for its approximately 1200 graduate students (inperson and online) who are seeking careers in education and mental health counseling related fields. As an active member of the Student Affairs team reporting to the Associate Director of Student Affairs this individual will provide career education professional development and life design principles to SOE graduate students and alumni.


Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage School of Education Career & Life Design (CLD) office includes providing professional development assistance to all students in person and virtual through individual appointments job search guidance resume and cover letter review interview preparation and career planning strategies and resources.
  • Develop content and facilitate workshops classroom presentations digital resources and career related events to help students and alumni achieve their career objectives.
  • Provide career development services and support for specific academic programs and collaborate with faculty and staff to help meet program and/or accreditation requirements.
  • Participate in new student orientation programs and events as part of the student affairs team.
  • Coordinate and offer assistance and resources to students interested in furthering their studies such as doctoral program selection and applications.
  • Collaborate with School of Education alumni office includes planning and participating in events that engage alumni to stay connected with SOE and university mentoring program networking events and expert panel discussions.
  • Collaborate with Universitys Vice Provost of Integrative Learning and Life Design (ILLD) and other colleagues from ILLD mentoring and employer engagement areas across the divisions.
  • Attend and represent SOE at Universitywide career services directors meetings trainings and events and attend conferences seminars and other forums to learn best practices in student career services.
  • Cultivate and strengthen relationships with campus partners and colleagues across units including academic departments academic advising life design lab and international student services.
  • Event management includes conceptualizing and creating programming and content identifying and coordinating faculty and expert panel participation and attendance writing marketing and promotional materials coordinating IT resources and managing inperson and webbased audience attendance and interaction.
  • Create and manage event and engagement related surveys and the First Destination Survey (FDS).
  • Develop and maintain employer relationships including schools agencies and other private and public organizations. Identify and provide career/mentoring/employment opportunities to students.
  • Promote Career Services office through social media by collaborating with marketing communications team.
  • Manage Career Services webpages and email account and manage Universitys Handshake platform.
  • Schedule and conduct appointments both inperson and virtual and provide walkin appointment hour especially during busy times in the academic year.
  • Be knowledgeable and updated on professional standards licensing certification and credentialrelated exams to assist students in meeting requirements in their professions.
  • Be knowledgeable of Life Design principles or willing to attend Life Design training.
  • Be knowledgeable of and apply appropriate career counseling interventions and trends related to career exploration.
  • Participate in school and University committees and initiatives including search committees.
  • Develop regular reports and analytics to showcase SOE student career pathways.
  • Document and share success stories of SOE students and alumni through various channels.
  • Track analyze and communicate engagement data to key stakeholders.
  • Assist in managing an administrative staff member and supervising student workers including peer career advisors.
  • Contribute to and assist with all Office of Student Affairs activities and initiatives represent the office positively within the SOE community and attend and participate in schoolwide events and activities.


Additional Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Proficiency with technology and the ability to quickly learn a wide range of systems databases collaboration tools and instructional technologies.
  • Strong communication organizational presentation and interpersonal skills.
  • Comfortable leading programs and interventions with groups and enjoys developing relationships and connections with multiple stakeholders.
  • Selfstarter with ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse and multicultural students and stakeholders/commitment to equality diversity and inclusion.
  • Must be comfortable presenting professionally to groups using technologies such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams.



Minimum Qualifications
  • Masters Degree.
  • Three years experience.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Masters Degree in Counseling Higher Education Administration Student Affairs or related field.
  • At least three years of experience in career services or advising in a higher education setting.
  • Demonstrated experience serving the career needs of advanced degree student population.
