Background
Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) akin to metalorganic frameworks (MOFs) are a subset of the materials which reticular chemistry characterized by their porous crystalline structures. These frameworks hold potential as highperformance materials across various fields including gas storage and separation vapor sorption catalysis biomedical applications chemical sensing and both electronic and ionic conduction. While the past decades have witnessed the discovery of over 100000 framework structures with unique properties less than 1000 COFs materials have been reported. Where MOF materials consist of frameworks with metal atom (nodes) coordinated to organic ligands (linkers) forming diverse topologies COFs primarily utilize main group nonmetal elements as nodes which connect to ligands via directional covalent bonds. However the strong covalent interactions significantly limit the crystallinity of target COFs which complicates both structure determination and prediction especially for novel topologies. Utilizing machine learning potentials to accelerate theoretical simulations for crystal structure prediction shows significant promise in addressing these issues.
Role Summary
In this project we will employ our recently developed WAM (WycoffAlignment of Molecules) algorithm in conjunction with firstprinciples calculations enhanced by machine learning to predict potential COF crystalline structures. This method has previously been successfully applied to the prediction of novel multifunctional MOFs. More details about the research group may be found at:
