Background:

UN Women grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development human rights humanitarian action and peace and security.

In Ukraine UN Women works with the government parliament and civil society in advancing gender equality through implementation of the national and international commitments on gender equality and womens human rights. UN Women Ukraine implements interventions towards the realization of following strategic goals: elimination of violence against women and girls; implementation of women peace and security agenda and gender responsive governance. UN Women works closely with the UN Country Team in integration of womens rights and gender equality in all spheres of UN work.

Since thebeginning of the Russian military invasion on 24 February 2022 Ukraine is rapidly emerging as one of the worlds most complex emergencies wherewomen and men girls and boys in all their diversities have been profoundly impacted. The humanitarian crisis has continued to escalate with varied and uneven gendered impacts. 56 per cent of the 3.7 million officially registered IDPs are women and women make up 93 per cent of the 4.6 million people returning to Ukraine and seeking to reintegrate into society1. As of December 2023 at least 14.5 million people (onethird of the population) need humanitarian aid of which 56 per cent are women and girls2. Womens groups and civil society organizations have been quick to react to the immediate priorities of their communities but face many challenges as they attempt to provide support to large numbers of internally displaced people hostcommunities and those directly affected by violence and insecurity. Civil society and particularly womens organizations in Ukraine are in the frontline to deliver immediate humanitarian assistance to displaced women and girls. Displaced women and girls are facing multiple human rights violations including sexual and genderbased violence.

In response to the invasion and humanitarian crisisthe United Nations Womens Peace and Humanitarian Fund (WPHF) with the technical support of UN Women has activated its emergency response for Ukraine by supporting local womens rights organizations in Ukraine and Moldova on the frontlines of the response to the needs and displacement of women and girls.

Reporting to Project Coordination Analyst the Programme Associate works with and provides support to the members of the Programme Team in the development and implementation of effective programmes consistent with UN Women rules and regulations. The Programme Associate contributes to research financial management and programme implementation including providing necessary operational administrative and programmatic support. The Programme Associate works in close collaboration with the operations programme and projects staff in the CO and UN Women HQs as required for resolving complex financerelated issues and exchange of information.
