About Fort Smith and the Arkansas River Valley
Fort Smith is a vibrant community of around 90000 with a low cost of living and ample recreational opportunities. Located in the beautiful Arkansas River Valley at the foothills of the Ozark mountains Fort Smith is nestled between the OzarkSt. Francis and Ouachita National Forests. The region provides hiking mountain biking rock climbing hang gliding whitewater rafting and camping all within a short drive. In addition the city supports a variety of cultural attractions including museums theaters an awardwinning symphony and two historic entertainment districts.
JOB SUMMARY
The Assistant Dean of Clinical Medicine under the supervision of the Associate Dean of Clinical Medicine is responsible for assisting in the oversight guidance and assessment of clinical medicine students. The Assistant Dean of Clinical Medicine will help provide longitudinal support to students on rotations participate in continuous quality improvement of educational sites and rotation opportunities engage in clinical faculty outreach and development activities coordinate with clinical rotation staff and have the opportunity for instruction of clinical knowledge and skills and osteopathic principles and practices. The Assistant Dean of Clinical Medicine is a vital part of the Clinical Medicine team and will work closely with campusbased employees and will work with ARCOMs educational software systems.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Provide oversight and direction for the education and instruction of medical students while providing mentorship and motivation for learning research and scholarly activity in classroom environments clinical settings active learning groups laboratory experience and research opportunities.
  • Establish and maintain scheduled hours for student advising tutoring remediation and consultation.
  • Participate in the assessment and evaluation of clinical activities of the students provide feedback and remedial assistance to ensure that the students of ARCOM meet the standards established by the faculty and college and obtain the knowledge skills and competency required.
  • Demonstrate the highest standard of professionalism and ethical behavior in all aspects of personal and professional actions and performance.
  • Demonstrate and role model an ongoing ability to work cooperatively with colleagues supervisors and support staff.
  • Demonstrate an ability to work skillfully as a group leader and group member.
  • Participate in preparation of academic evaluative reports.
  • Work with the Academic Administration on delivery of faculty development for clinical preceptors.
  • Advance research and scholarly activity among students on clinical rotations through mentorship.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Associate Dean or his/her designee.
QUALIFICATIONS AND CREDENTIALS
Education and Experience
Minimum Qualifications
  • Terminal Degree: DO MD with current Board Certification in appropriate area of specialization if applicable.
  • Three 3 years experience as a clinical preceptor or faculty member at a College of Osteopathic Medicine College of Allopathic Medicine Academic Health Care Teaching Center or a Graduate Medical Education Program.
  • Eligible for coverage by colleges malpractice insurer if applicable.
  • Demonstrated leadership productivity and administrative experience in a professional research or educational setting.
  • Strong skills pertinent to teamwork communication staff management and supervision analytic problem solving and education advocacy.
  • Good standing with all regulatory and governmental boards and agencies.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Three 3 to five 5 years academic experience as a fulltime faculty member at a College of Osteopathic Medicine College of Allopathic Medicine Academic Health Care Teaching Center or Graduate Medical Education program.
  • Demonstrate leadership and productivity in the areas of clinical or professional service scholarly activity medical research or education.
Required knowledge skills and abilities
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skill in the delivery of medical education in one or more of the following settings: classroom laboratory simulation and standardized laboratory settings; or in clinical settings for students and/or residents.
  • Demonstrate ability to mentor and motivate students and peers.
  • Demonstrate a depth of knowledge in one or more of the medical psychological or social disciplines required for the education of medical students the practice of medicine the advancement of medical knowledge and research.
  • Demonstrate leadership skills organizational skills delegation skills and time management skills.

Physical and Sensory Abilities
  • May be exposed to short intermittent and/or prolonged periods of sitting and/or standing in performance of job duties.
  • May be required to accomplish job duties using various types of equipment/supplies to include but not limited to pens pencils calculators computer keyboards telephone etc.
  • May be required to transport oneself to other campus offices conference rooms and on occasion to offcampus sites to attend meetings conferences workshops seminars etc.
  • May require intermittent travel or work away from campus.
  • Requires attendance at events representing ACHE both within as well as outside of the college setting.
  • Frequently required to work at a desk conference table or in meetings of various configurations.
  • Frequently required to see for purposes of reading matter.
  • Frequently required to hear and understand speech at normal levels.
  • Occasionally required to lift items in a normal office environment.
  • Frequently required to operate office and presentation equipment.
