JOB SUMMARY

The Bus Maintenance Technician assists the School Bus Mechanics in maintaining equipment for students staff and public in a safe operating condition; performing preventive maintenance and light duty mechanical work; and maintaining work areas in a clean and orderly fashion.

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

All positions require selected candidates to be fingerprinted and successfully pass a criminal background check. Additional minimum required qualifications for this position are:

  1. High school diploma or equivalent
  2. One 1 year of jobrelated experience
  3. Valid Drivers License and evidence of insurability
  4. Must be 21 years of age or older
  5. Have or obtain a Commercial Driver License (CDL) within 60 days of hire. The district will provide all essential training needed to obtain a CDL
  6. Able to roll push pull bend reach stoop and lift up to 50 pounds
  7. Ability to pass the Physical Assessment Standards for Utah School Bus Drivers
  8. Speak read write analyze and follow written and verbal communication in English; listen to and understand information and ideas presented verbally or in writing

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

These are examples of skills and experience that the bestqualified candidates may have. Not having one or all of them does not disqualify any candidate from consideration.

  1. CDL endorsements (including passenger air brakes and school bus)
  2. Experience with industrystandard tools and diagnostic equipment
  3. Experience in a K12 education or public employment environment

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Assist school bus mechanics with basic bus repairs and maintenance (e.g. fans motors brakes springs tires upholstery seat covers etc. and complete projects/work orders
  2. Collect equipment and system components to provide mechanics with parts for repair or replacement
  3. Determine materials and equipment needed to complete basic repair and maintenance projects to ensure timely completion of projects
  4. Drives bus to diagnose malfunctions
  5. Implement assigned programs or projects (e.g. inspection schedules preventive maintenance programs etc. according to established guidelines
  6. Input information into computer databases and written forms (e.g. maintenance reports work orders time sheets inventory etc. to provide documentation in accordance with department needs and legal requirements
  7. Inspect equipment and own work (e.g. brakes steering fluids tires etc. to ensure work quality standards are met and identify preventive maintenance requirements
  8. Install basic bus parts (e.g. fans motors brakes springs tires etc. to complete projects safely and within established time frames
  9. Maintain shop areas (e.g. cleaning organizing tools and equipment etc. to provide for safety and efficiency in the shop
  10. Maintain vehicles tools and equipment to ensure the availability of buses in clean safe operating condition that conforms to specifications
  11. Prepares documentation (e.g. mileage bus service log requisitions work orders etc. to document activities and convey information
  12. Responds to emergencies as assigned to resolve immediate safety concerns
  13. Participate in meetings workshops and seminars as assigned to convey and gather information required to perform functions
  14. Communicate effectively with diverse individuals and groups of people while maintaining confidentiality and building positive working relationships with employees and stakeholders
  15. Maintain regular and predictable attendance to fulfill job requirements efficiently and effectively
  16. Adapt to changing work priorities and work with frequent interruptions as required
  17. Assist other personnel and support a team environment by collaborating to effectively perform the duties of the position and to ensure an efficient and effective work environment
  18. Drive and serve as a substitute bus driver as needed
  19. Work under limited supervision utilizing timemanagement and prioritization strategies accurately processing detailed information and meeting deadlines

  21. Perform other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The usual and customary methods of performing the jobs functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting carrying pushing pulling up to 50 pounds occasionally climbing balancing stooping kneeling crouching crawling and fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 10 sitting 25 walking and 65 standing. The job is performed under some temperature variations and under conditions with some exposure to the risk of injury and illness.
