FullTime and Permanent; 7.33 Hours/Day; 200 Days/Year; 10 Months/Year
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- Endorsement in the State of Virginia as a math specialist OR qualify to obtain licensure as a math specialist.
- Minimum of at least three years of successful classroom teaching experience in which the teaching of mathematics was an important responsibility
- Leadership skills necessary to assist teachers parents and administrators as a resource.
- Familiarity with mathematics assessments
- Knowledge of current research and best practices in the field of mathematics
Nature of Position
This is specialized work performed in a school. The math specialist performs complex professional work providing math instruction to students evaluating student performance in math motivating students to develop strategies and skills in the area of math (small group 1:1 or in a regular classroom). The math specialist also provides staff development by modeling instruction coteaching and /or planning with building staff as requested by building level faculty the principal and/or the Division of Teaching & Learning (typically the Mathematics Senior Coordinator). This position is a renewable one year only position and is contingent upon performance.
EXAMPES OF DUTIES
The minimum performance expectations include but are not limited to the following functions/tasks:
- Maintains and respects confidentiality of student and school personnel information
- Designs and delivers instruction for students/small groups and/or classes assigned to achieve desired objectives that reflect the Virginia Standards of Learning and division curriculum guidelines and shows evidence of lesson preparation upon request of administrator(s)
- Designs and delivers professional development for staff focusing on evidenced based best practices in mathematics instruction to achieve desired objectives that reflect the Virginia Standards of Learning and division curriculum guidelines.
- Diagnoses individual group and program needs using data and plans for the appropriate use of time materials technology and resources to promote the development of critical thinking problem solving and performance skills
- Evaluates students progress; provides students with specific evaluative feedback; maintains appropriate records and prepares progress information for reports
- Identifies and communicates specific student performance expectations and documents student learning gains using a variety of appropriate assessment instruments
- Differentiates instruction to meet diverse student needs
- Selects evaluates and refines a variety of teaching methods and instructional strategies for the active engagement and selfmotivation of students and improvement of student learning
- Implements discipline practices that foster a safe and positive environment for all students and staff
- Manages classroom procedures to maximize academic learning time in order to motivate students to achieve maximum potential
- Works collaboratively with other teachers staff administrators parents and community resources to support the success of a diverse student population
- Takes responsibility for and participates in a meaningful and continuous process of personal professional development
- Complies with and supports school and division regulations and policies
- Communicates with special education and classroom teachers students student counselors and parents through conferences and other means
- Participates in curriculum development programs faculty committees and student activity sponsorship as required
- Provides support for the special education and classroom teachers in relation to the Standards of Learning remediation acceleration and the district curriculum;
- Performs related duties as assigned by the administration in accordance with the school/system policies and practices.
- Models professional moral and ethical standards as well as personal integrity in all interactions
KNOWLEDGE SKILL AND ABILITY
- Thorough knowledge of skills and processes of the Virginia Mathematics Standards of Learning and how curriculum may be organized to teach these standards to diverse learners
- Indepth knowledge of the principles and methodology of effective teaching
- Ability to deliver articulate oral presentations and to prepare wellwritten reports.
- Ability to interact effectively with students staff administrators parents and community.
- Knowledgeable in the use of instructional technology.
