JOB SUMMARY

The purpose of this internship is to provide a learning experience related to highprofile policy development implementation and project management. This opportunity provides interns firsthand experience with a wide variety of projects and programs working alongside senior staff in the Mayors Office. In addition to countylevel work the internship may also expose the intern to state and federal work.

The Mayors Office oversees a range of policy initiatives special projects program partnerships and funding collaborations that help achieve the Mayors vision. We work with local governments and with national state and private sector partners to develop collective action around regional challenges entrenched social problems and unique opportunities to maximize the public good. This currently includes policy initiatives on regional development public asset management homelessness and housing criminal justice reform and child and family stability.

Applicants should have a strong interest in political research policy development project management and government processes. Work is primarily Monday through Friday with flexible hours to accommodate a school schedule. There may be occasional work on the weekends.

Applicants must be currently enrolled in a Bachelor OR Graduate program.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Gather interpret and present research and data that informs policy and project outcomes.
  • Aid in the creation and implementation of a project dashboard to coordinate data sharing across County teams.
  • Actively assist with projects as needed including responding to priorities and resourcing needs as they shift over the lifecycle of the project.
  • Prepare complex narratives briefings and other documents circulated to elected officials and stakeholders.
  • Engage in the continuous improvement of project management processes and procedures.
  • Participate in professional development programs developed by Intern Program Managers.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Data analytical skills to analyze project goals ongoing metrics and results.
  • Ability to adapt to changing circumstances and priorities in a focused and timely manner.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work well in a team environment while balancing individual work.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Research design knowledge/skills.
  • Experience with Microsoft 365 products (especially SharePoint) Smartsheet and project management software.
  • Students with a focus in political science statistical analysis or social sciences preferred.

PAY: $18.00/hour

START DATE: The internship begins May 2025 (start date flexible) and ends August 2025. There may be the possibility of an extension.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Interns will work from the Salt Lake County Government Complex with the opportunity for remote hours within the state of Utah. They will be provided with a computer and an email account. Interns may be asked to attend meetings offsite at other government facilities or in the community. Interns may be sitting for long periods of time at a computer.
