Job Description

Student Health and Wellbeing (SHWB) Mental Health Services at Johns Hopkins University seeks an energetic organized and motivated Mental Health Services (MHS) Clinician Liaison to International Students to work in a dynamic and fastpaced environment focused on delivering innovative mental healthcare and supporting the wellbeing of a diverse community of learners.


This role will focus on utilizing generalist clinical skills and experience along with expertise in outreach and consultation as essential mental health interventions. This position will work collaboratively within the MHS outreach team and with students student organizations and offices across the university to develop relationships programs and services designed to meet the needs of the universitys international student population. As with all staff within Mental Health Services this MHS Clinician Liaison to International Students will also operate as a generalist who provides a full range of clinical services including initial consultations individual goaldirected therapy workshops groups and crisis intervention.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • This positions direct clinical service responsibilities will be split between the Homewood and East Baltimore campuses and may provide some virtual or inperson services in Washington D.C. See minimum qualifications for required timeframes of licensure. Jurisdictions requiredMaryland and Washington D.C.


Direct Clinical Service 5565 based on demand and clinic needs)

  • Creates a warm and welcoming clinical environment where clients feel supported and respected as they pursue their personal academic and professional goals.
  • Provides multiculturally informed direct clinical services including goaloriented approaches to initial consultations intake assessments singlesession therapy individual counseling group and relationship counseling and crisis intervention for a diverse community of undergraduate graduate and professional students and learners.
  • Utilizes both flexible and goaloriented approaches to individual treatment such as cognitive behavioral therapy dialectical behavioral therapy and interpersonal therapy often in collaboration with treating psychiatrists.
  • Collaborates with providers within SHWB as an interdisciplinary treatment team including therapists psychiatric providers primary care clinicians case management and disability services staff.
  • Provides clinical case management to support connections to appropriate resources and bridge clients to care.
  • Consults as appropriate with providers in the community to facilitate continuity of care.


Outreach 2530

  • Develops implements and integrates evaluation feedback for psychoeducational workshops and other presentations for JHU students and learners with a special emphasis on prevention and intervention efforts for international students.
  • Develops and facilitates opportunities for informal interactions with students to reduce barriers to counseling which may include offering dropin and chat hours attending student events and participating in a range of studentled and studentfocused programs.
  • Maintains a visible presence through participation in outreach and educational activities including resource fairs heritage events and community activities.
  • Conducts ongoing assessment of international students holistic needs through collaborations with students campus partners and the broader community of JHU to help reduce barriers to counseling and mental health services.
  • Generates content for MHS social media related to the mental health of international students.
  • Takes the lead on developing and maintaining partnerships with students student organizations and universitywide groups for international students.
  • Works collaboratively with the Office of International Students Center for Diversity and Inclusion Center for Student Success and other offices to develop a network of support services to proactively address the holistic wellbeing needs of international students.


Collaborative and Other Activities 20

  • Remains abreast of current literature and research on student behavioral health and evidencebased intervention strategies.
  • Contributes to the professional development of trainees and SHWB staff through the provision of didactic training and seminars including topics such as racism and racial trauma.
  • Participates in case consultation student risk management peer chart reviews and other departmental committees as directed.
  • Participates in clinical training programs; licensed psychologists will enter the pool of available individual supervisors for the APAapproved psychology internship training program after 2 years of postlicensure experience.
  • Works collaboratively with campus partners to support both the clinical and programmatic needs of students and learners.
  • Participates in MHS recruitment and hiring processes.
  • Completes documentation and administrative duties in accordance with MHS policies and procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Special Knowledge Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of priorities and concerns specific to international students and learners including visa and immigration considerations.
  • Ability to create and develop new programs with a level of independence and initiative.
  • Experience independently executing psychoeducational presentations programs and events for a wide audience.
  • Specialized training interest and/or experience working with international student populations.

Additional Information (Working Conditions)

  • Schedule:
    • This is a 37.5 hour/week position. One evening clinic per week (until 7pm) may be required; additional flexible schedule options may be available
    • This position requires occasional evening and weekend work dependent on the programmatic needs of the University and for activities during the academic year (orientation special events etc.
    • One day of remote work is standard; additional remote days may be required or permitted based on operational needs
    • This is a 12month position yearround position


  • This position is designated as a Required Attendance Employee designated as vital to the operation of a work group so may be required to work during a university closure in response to operational needs.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Masters Degree in Counseling Psychology or Social Work from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum of 2 years postgraduate clinical experience.
  • Independently licensed as a mental health provider in primary required jurisdiction(s) noted in job description prior to start date; licensure in additionally required jurisdiction(s) required within 6 months of hire.


Substitution/Equivalency

  • Doctoral Degree (Ph.D. or Psy.D. in psychology from an APA accredited program and completion of an APA internship. If eligibility is based on a doctoral degree (Ph.D. or Psy.D. in psychology postgrad experience is not required to meet the minimum qualifications. Recent doctoral graduate hires must obtain licensure as a psychologist in a minimum of one required jurisdiction(s) noted in job description within 12 months of hire; licensure in additional required jurisdictions required within 2 years of hire.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Doctoral Degree (Ph.D. or Psy.D. from an accredited program.
  • Licensed as a psychologist in required jurisdiction(s) noted in job description or licenseeligible (must obtain licensure in required jurisdiction(s) within 6 months of hire).
  • Clinical experience in a university setting strongly preferred.
  • Bilingual proficiency is highly desirable.
